When is too much...too much?
« on: June 22, 2009, 09:56:50 AM »
We had a two night revival this weekend, BTW it was awesome :)  and on Friday, the speaker brought a friend with her and brought her on the pulpit without asking my pops. Anyway, the lady had some super duper (and I do stress the word super) long bright nails and each nail had a charm or ring poked through it dangling like a earring. I was like yuck, how do you clean yourself after...well anyway :D

My mom and I ran into another lady who's an evangelist..I mean this lady had blonde weave touching her butt, she had these Elton John glasses on, sparkly blue tights with this bright pink shirt, nails as long as the other lady's, make up like icing on a cake and when she took the glasses off, she had rhinestones outlining her eyebrows :D

My question is..how much IS too much? Can too much take away from a person's anointing? Can a person's appearance cause people to take them for a joke when they're trying to witness or when they're on the pulpit? I think it can to an extent, but I wanted to see what the good folks on LGM thought...

Just the other day, I was in the mall with a girlfriend and she pointed out a blouse she liked.  I said, "you would wear that??" And she said, "yep."  I said, "Is that modest?"  She said, "nope."  So we got into a discussion about what the Bible says about modesty.

Concerning nails, makeup, apparel, and overall presentation for clergy members, I say this: there are different opinions about what is modest and what is immodest.  The definition of "modest apparel" can really be subjective.  However, there are some things that just aren't modest, no matter who you ask.  Four inch, neon green nails aren't modest.  Period.  That's not even up for discussion. LOL!  A skirt that stops just below your butt cheek isn't modest.  Period.  Also not up for discussion. LOL

So yeah, I think that stuff is "too much" and goes against the Word of God, but a blond weave/wig, sparkly tights, thick makeup, glamour glasses and rhinestones are all a sticky subject because it depends on what the person views as modesty.  I once heard a preacher talk about "those Steve Harvey suits" because they have stitching and pleated backs.  :-\  But, I definitely don't think those things can take away from a person's anointing.  God anoints whom He chooses, and there's no rhyme or reason to it (not one that we can see, anyway).

I know one thing... as for ME... if it offends my brother or sister, I don't mind doing away with it.  It just ain't that serious for me.

When you're in love you don't want to fall asleep bc reality is finally better than your dreams.

While I agree with everthing else you said, I think the part in bold hits it right on the head.  If the person's quesionable taste causes a stumblingblock for someone else, then they need to change.

I would seriously agree, you can reach the unsaved without looking like them. Also wearing somethings bring attention that is not positive. Honestly, what would be the difference between the saved and unsaved then. If i see a woman up in the pulpit or in church with the tightest dress on showing all her stuff with a low cut (in the front) shown bossum... and then want to preach to me I am turned off quickly... same thing I would say if I seen a pastor talking street to me, I will scratch my head... appearance does effect the messege...

What if the pastor is from the streets and that's all he knows?  :-\ ;D

And I totally agree about your other example.  I cannot STAND to see a saved woman in church with tight clothes or cleavage.

I don't know why some women refuse to go up a size when they put on a few pounds.  :-\

Everything is in bold LL, which part are you referring to :D  I'm just joking and I also agree with you and LaRue. Like someone was saying how the second lady I described can preach and sing, but she's so boisterous and flamboyant, that it's hard to see past that...IDK...I guess you can say man looks at the outward appearance, but God sees the heart, but at that same time you should be modest IMO

Good lookin out, but that scripture doesn't even work for those folks because when you're preaching or evangelizing, you're ministering to MAN... so yeah, God seeing your heart is cool and all, but if man can't hear the message because they're distracted by your outward appearance, something is wrong...

Yeah the Bible talks about moderation and I think that covers our appearance as well.  That over-the-topness definitely takes people's focus off of the message we're trying to convey.

Check this out for kicks (Disclaimer: this is is not my personal belief)  A Pastor I know stated that someone who preaches the gospel (Pastor, evangelist, etc.) cannot be extremely unattractive.  He said they are probably called to something else, because someone who publicly addresses people in the name of persuading them of the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ can't be repelling them with his/her looks.  ?/? IDK 'bout that one.

IDK either Ness..I don't agree with that. God uses whom He chooses. That person may have an awesome testimony. For example a person's face could be disfigured because they were in a fire, everyone else died in that fire, but God spared their life :-\  I believe that person should  definitely be evangelizing IMO

Now, if you talkin about I'm blessed and highly favored and you smellin up the place, lookin crazy not even tryin to be presentable or approachable, then thats a different story :D :-\

That's what I was thinking, too.  The stuff you have control over is one thing, but one has little control over whether their face is attractive to most people or not.

I would just want that particular pastor to define exactly what "extreme unattractiveness" looks like... and then when he's finished defining it, I want to ask him: How do YOU know?

Not to mention the fact that "attractive" is extremely subjective, so what's homemade sin ugly to one may be very attractive to another.
