Deal, or No Deal?

I have an opportunity to buy this snare...



For $100.  How good a deal do you think this is?  I'm not very knowledgeable, but I'm the drummer at my church.  Our set is jacked, but I'm trying to upgrade little by little.

Dissenting opinion: I wouldn't keep it as my main snare for too long, though.  It's not versatile in the tuning range.

That's what I'm thinkin...  thanks jkay for sharing that with me, though.  I also need to get a decent crash at a more decent price by Sunday.  That's our first service in our new building, and I want to replace the really over due stuff by then.  I don't want to go into a new building with the same old frustrations, lol. 

For the record, I'll be removing this stuff every Sunday (also getting a pedal), because stuff has the tendency to get damages and nobody ever has a clue how.  But I'm sure none of y'all deal with that, lol.

How much are you willing to spend for a crash, what size, and are you spending your own personal funds?

That is a nice snare, the church I play at has one.  It will give you alot of pop but nothing else.

Oh and size... I'm unsure.  I know the sound I like, I'm gonna go look at guitar center and see what's what.  Our last drummer trashed the crash before he left. :(

That is a Pearl Free-Floating shell snare.  They are rather pricey running around $300+ brand new depending on where you look, and $100 is an awesome deal.  You need to jump on that real quick.  Plus, that is a maple shell from the looks of it which makes it an even better deal.  It will change your sound and have cats talking.  I had the 6.5x14 size with the steel shell when I bought my kit, and like an idiot I sold it after a couple of years.  I am so mad at myself for doing that.  Get on it Nessie-poo.

You should think about getting a good used cymbal for $100 (Zildjian or Sabian) it doesn't matter. What matters to me is the if you get a really good cymbal. Try to stay away from the cheap models like B-8, ZBT, Bronze, etc. Going that route will be a waste of your money. Keep your receipts, so you can get your money back. And if you're going to donate the equipment, you can write it off on your taxes.

As for the size, I would go with a 18". Nice full sound.

Thanks, BB!  I was thinking that, too, I've had b-8 and ZBT, and I really wanted to do a little better this time, lol.  I been looking on Craigslist, I think I'm going to checkout the pawn shop circuit tomorrow.  You are so cool for helpin' a sista out.

Great deal nessalynn77.

I have that snare with a copper shell. You will probably want to get a cooper and a brass shell. JFUNKY has the maple at his church. The maple shell has an annoying ring to it all to often (everyone owner that I have talked to).

Finding the right head combo it essential. I recommend the EVANS Genera HD on top and the Hazy 300 on bottom tuned both medium tight. This will give you sensivity and fatness.

I highly recommend you use a smaller stick like a Sweet Ride from Vic Fith or Vater or a Maple stick. reason being is that piccolo snares pack a lot of volume and must be played with control or else they will over power everything else. The Pearl free-floater in particular with it's die-cast hoops and marching drum design (free-floater) is for increased resonance and volume and cut. Many jazz greats have and do use piccolo snares: Peter Erskine, Ed Thigpin, Max Roach, and Funk Legend Dave Garibaldi studio/touring drum great Tom Knight so it not the size of the drum that creates the problems it is the control of the player (or lack thereof).
