Strings
« on: August 18, 2009, 12:14:27 PM »
I have DR Hi Beams
45, 65, 85, 105, 125

They have a nice rich sound but they’re a bit stiff at standard tuning.  Does anybody know of some lighter strings that don't sound twangy?

Hi Beams are know for that "twang" and attack...if you're looking for a more "old school" sound maybe consider flats?

How do you like the Dean Markley SR2000's? I was using those on my MTD for a while but found myself having to buy new strings almost once a month!

They are the best strings i've tried so far. They do go dead rather quickly but I rotate strings usually once a week. I am probably going to switch to something else here pretty soon. Those can be my fall back strings.

I wanted to try out the SR2000s but when I saw the price and how quickly they went dead, I said I'm stinking with my guns. D'Addarios!!!! Jeremy has me contemplating trying out some Hartke's though.
Keep God first and he'll do the rest!!!

I agree that the SR2000's had the best tone of any string I've played thus far but the short life was eating a giant hole in my pocket!
I've switched to DR Black Beauties and have been very happy.  They're not quite as bright (almost, but not quite) as the SR's but they have an added warmth that's also nice. They also last forever lol....pricey but well worth the $ since I don't have to change strings every few weeks any more.

i usually get my repair guy to put a set of ken smith's on my bass when i get a setup. but i just put some no name strings from juststrings.com (got them free with a bass i bought) on my Schecter (got tired of those DR Long Necks) and this gives me straight Marcus Miller tone. dont know how long that'll last.

I'd love to try some on my MM4, but I do alot of thumping, so Im scared I will chip the coating off after a while.  Ive used Fat Beams for like the last 4 yrs exclusively.  I did find a set of Dean Markleys that were on clearance, and they are the best strings Ive had yet.  Unfortunately I shouldve kept the box, cause I dont know what they are  :-\

I have DR Black Beauties on two of my 5 string basses.
I have DR Marcus Millers on the other 5 string and one of my 4 strings.
I have Ken Smith Burners on the other 4 string.

I used to only use Alembic strings on my Alembics and Ken Smith strings on everything else, but I'm really liking DR lately.

I throw in some thumping and slapping in my playing and the coating still lasts fairly well.  My last set of strings were on the bass for about 4 monthes (maybe?) and they held up to a minimum of 3 rehearsals, 2 sunday svcs, and whatever other gigs I may have picked up along the way. IME the coating won't start to go until the tone is already on it's way out the door lol

Medium Ken Smiths.  I've been using them for a couple years now. (not the same set but I do change strings a lot less than most bass players)
Replace "I can't" with "I don't know how" then go learn.

I have GHS boomers and I have had them on for about 6 months. My secret is fast fret (About 5 bucks at GC.) My strings sound like new.I put it on 5 minutes before I play and boom. sounds like new strings. Now this is only until feel the need to buy new strings. A brotha gotta penny pinch to save for the wedding!!! LOL!!!

Cedric Patterson actually taught me that trick but it works wonders. Keith turned me on to the Boomers but I may go back to DR Fat beams Mediums. I liked the feel. I've gotten used to these heavy Boomers but not my cup of tea!!
