Gospel Guitar 101 "Praise Songs" J. Griggs
« on: August 21, 2009, 06:57:25 AM »
I received an e-mail from hearandplay about a guitar course taught by Bobby Griffin. Anybody have any experience with this dvd. I have'nt picked up my guitar in a few years, just bass. I consider myself an advanced beginner (I know the CAGED and easier 4 string voicings). Will this help get me up to speed on praise songs? Thanks.     http://www.hearandplay.com/newguitar

I purchase the download about two weeks ago....and haven't had time to watch it yet.

I also purchased the DVD today just to show my support for Hear & Play producing more guitar specific offerings in the future.

There's so little offered in this vein that I think ALL guitarists should pick up a copy!  8)

When you get a chance please post a short review. I agree with you about the purchasing support. I love all of the things I have gotten from Jermaine and will purchase this DVD if it isn't too far over my head. Thanks.

On a side note... I wasn't familiar with what the CAGED thingy was, so I looked it up, and I'm racking my brain trying to figure out why this is even needed.

When I learned all of my movable chords, I just memorized where the roots are in the shape, and I just put that where it needed to go.

Why fancy-up something that's as simple as 'learn your fretboard'?

Maybe i'm becoming old and hard-nosed, but at a quick glance, I didn't see the benefit of giving a necessity a fancy name.

Then again... I'm in the restroom at work right now, so what do I know? Lol

I think stuff like this is good for a guitarist who would like to play gospel music.

I learned this stuff the long way around and I am still learning to play it BETTER THAN EVER.

Videos like this and music theory will make a great gospel musician.

I have the dvd. It is cool and worth the money. The dude is bad. These type of songs, foundation are simple. You know,1-4-1-4-5.Throw in 6,then 2-5-1,to get you back to the start of song. But,it up to you to add flavor. He show how he do it.Do you know, what i called the gospel scale. It is a must. You can use four chord vocing, but this dvd get much deeper that that.He play all songs in ab.With some James feel, and a touch of jazz. But,get it.You can`t go wrong. This brother is so badd. 8)

makes total sense to me...most congregational/hymn type songs are very repetitive and don't allow for very much creativity. that doesn't mean it's easy to play them...if you don't have pocket or feel you won't sound good...but the actual chords/notes themselves are pretty standard blues/country fare...

Congregation songs,is before church service starts.Hymns, are normanlly  what you opens the service up with.Blues, yea for sure.Country, not in the baptist church. Yes,some from western standard music.Jlynnb1 yes pretty standard stuff. But,there is the opportunity,to make things interesting. This music is so fast,it`s sometimes hard to get licks in between chords.Somethings to use,is the gospel scale, and the gospel bounce.Throw in some quartet licks, use that pinky. 8)

yeah i know the difference...but imho the only chance to make things very interesting is if the whole band is trying to. if most cats are playing traditional styles and you are trying to throw in outside stuff it's not gonna sit. also, if you don't think country guitar influences that stuff you are crazy....especially anything remotely related to quartet/old school church music. all those quartet licks some of you guys love have so much country influence in them it's crazy. just goes to show that everything influences everything else...whether we realize/admit it.

and not all country music is hee-haw. if you don't think the country/rockabliiy players from the 50's and 60's influence r&b/blues pioneers of the same era (and vice versa)..i don't knwo what to tell you...
