issue with the rehearsal: now i know my natural style doesnt fit with the keyboardist and drummer (who play together on a regular basis) so i try to listen to see where i fit in. so they complain that the bass is lacking. so when i go at it, theres complaints about what im doing. um, you either want me to play the way i play or fit in with you, you CANNOT have both.

so one song im playing dead notes (i slip them in occasionally) but the keyboardist didnt want me doing that. seeing that he started as a bass player, he should be able to say what im doing that he doesnt want me to do, but he cant. so pretty much his attempt at an explanation comes off as "your playing is sloppy" and "you dont know what you're doing" (not exact words, but its like he pretty much couldve just said that) and of course i took offense. who wouldnt?

so he starts getting upset, because im telling him, what he's telling me to do im doing that. He's telling me i could lead into notes (as if im some beginner) which is what i was doing, so he gets mad because im telling him theres no difference in what you're doing than what im doing except timing. Then he says im doing a whole bunch of extra stuff when all i was doing was one or 2 passing notes (which is exactly what he did on the keyboard) with the occasional dead note.

so how does "dont play any dead notes for this song" (which were very few by the way) = "you need to clean up your playing"? that is soooooooo not the same.

and i know ive grown in the Lord because i shut up. cause i soooo wanted to say "stop transposing so we can play the song in the same key every time we play it" but i didnt say that. (we had a 5 minute debate about him being in the wrong key and we went to the record to prove i was right).

With this and other things, i've decided that after this concert on the 19th, im done with them.

Is there any value in taking two basses to the next rehearsal and asking him to pick one up and show you exactly what he doesn't want you to do as well as exactly what he wants you to do?

Oh my. If this is just a one-off engagement I agree with you. In the meantime, I commend your spirit in working with difficult people.

its actually not. besides i have to get on the train at rush hour both in the morning and evening with my bass and amp on the days of rehearsal. taking a second would next to impossible. i let him hold the bass and show me what he wants me to do, but he shows me like i just started playing bass yesterday on my Fisher Price "My First Bass", and i stay humble because it feels very degrading. I'll just take me out of the picture, play to the specifications, and be prepared not to enjoy myself. no big deal.
