Software Based Recording

What do I need to start computer based recording? What type of laptop, software, other hardware. etc. How much would this cost to get started?

I have a AW4416, but everyone says software base is better as you can get better sounds then most keyboards.

This is just for recording music no vocals,

You need a laptop that has a built in mic, able to use USB, some popular software out there today is Logic, Pro tools, etc. to me you dont really need an expensive laptop to record, just look for the right one,around $500 would begood, not sure how much software costsbut you could look online at guitarcenter maybe

Make sure your PC or Laptop has at least 1GB of RAM to handle the software, otherwise the program may run slow.  And you need to make sure the Hard Drive is sufficient enough in size to store your data AND audio files.  I'd say no less than 160 GB to start.

This really isn't true.  There may be pros and cons to using either software or hardware.  Many find software to be more convenient and possily less costly because you don't need to have physical space for hardware, etc.  On the flip side, when it comes to analog synths and all the things you can do with the sound outside the box, hardware definately has some advantages as well.  It's really up to you.

I suggest what you really need to do first is take some time to read up on the topic on Audio Recording if you haven't done so already.  Lots of good material out there but a really good book I've found is Practical Recording Techniques - Fourth (comes with CD) or Fifth (No CD) Edition by Bruce Bartlett.  It discusses the basics of digital recording, SW-based and HW-based recording, MIDI equipment, Mixers, Judging Sound Quality, Microphone Techniques, and other related recording topics.  Good Luck in your quest.
