My bio-dad bought me a 3/4 size Strat copy when I was 8 or 9.  I proceeded to learn 3 chords, and for 4 years, did not learn anything else (never practiced--didn't care yet).

When I was 11, my step-dad's friend traded me for a Series 10 LP copy (straight up--case and all).  That sat in the corner for a year, and then I hit Jr. High--so I figured, "man, if I want a girl, I gotta' learn to play this thing."  So I started up with those same three chords, and when I could change those without looking, my dad (step) would show me three more.

I eventually got to listening to old Clapton, etc., and learned lead.  I did not take any professional lessons until I was 18.

Oh, it doesn't get you the girls, by the way.  Doesn't matter, the one I married is way better than the ones I was after in High School!

I was a late bloomer. I picked the guitar at the ripe old age of twenty four when I worked at a place where I had time galore to practice. I learned four chords,G,C,D and E minor. My first song to play was "Heart of Gold" by Neil Young,I can even play the harmonica while strumming the guitar to this song. Eventually,I learned the blues scale and learned how to bend and vibrato. This is still my main scale,it's so much fun to play, and not a whole lot of notes either. I was drawn in by Eric Clapton, still trying to cop his licks and later Stevie Ray Vaughn, and still learning. No matter how young or old you are you never get tired of it once you got bitten by the music bug,you just wanna keep on playing!
