You need to spend some quality time in Michigan and Ohio. Trains cross at street level on major thoroughfares. They have teensy weeny little plywood arms that come down to "prevent" traffic from crossing the tracks while a train is chuggin' through.
We also have "Breaking News!.....This just in...a speeding train collided with a car trying to beat the barricade arms. Police on the scene report that there are likely no survivors in the car."
Where I'm from, the tracks are either below street level or bridge over the street.
BTW.....in the original photo, the train COULD have been going the opposite way. Heavy trains often have an engine at each end. Makes "reverse" a lot easier.
