I'm learning how to play the bass.  Could you explain what those numbers and lines mean, because I'm lost.  Thanks for your help.

..THIS IS CALLED "TAB"
IT IS AN EASY WAY TO SHOW PEOPLE WHAT TO PLAY WITH PICTURES!

THE 4 LINES ARE THE STRINGS ON YOUR BASS (4 STIRNG BASS THAT IS)

IT IS MEANT TO BE LOOKED AT AS IF YOU WERE LOOKING DOWN AT YOUR BASS NECK...SO THE BOTTOM LINE IS YOUR E STRING AND THE TOP LINE IS YOUR G STRING!

THE NUMBERS ARE THE FRETS THAT THE NOTE IS ON!
SO THE FIRST TWO NUMBERS FOR EXAMPLE GO LIKE THIS

G   --9---------------------------------------------
D   -10---------------------------------------------
A   -----------------------------------------------
E   -----------------------------------------------

ON THE G STRING PLAY THE NOTE ON THE 9TH FRET
AND
ON THE D STRING PLAY THE NOTE ON THE  10TH FRET
BECAUSE THE NUMBERS ARE ON TOP OF ONE ANOTHER YOU PLAY THEM AT THE SAME TIME, LIKE A CHORD...IF THE NUMBERS ARE NOTE ON TOP OF EACH OTHER PLAY THEM SEPERATELY IN THE ORDER THAT THEY ARE SHOWN!

Yes!...any notes that are one on top of the other on the tab are to be played at the same time like a chord!
