Flying with your bass
« on: November 28, 2009, 09:10:19 PM »
Has anyone took their Bass on the plane?

I travel to Georgia almost every weekend and my brother has a good bass, but it's not my Bass.
I don't want to check it, but will it fit in the overhead?

I haven't been on many different planes in my life time. Only about four. But I have yet to encounter a plane with overhead storage long enough for a bass. If I were you, I'd just make sure I have the bass in a hardshell case, not just a gig bag. Say a prayer And let em put it with the cargo!
Keys, bass, drums, trombone, I sing a lil bit too lol

If its a decent airline, the flight crew will store it for you on the plane.  I've had to do this...but being Canadian, our Government isn't under constant attack, making everyone and their child out to be a threat.

Carry the bass on as a carry-on luggage. I flew to Missouri earlier this year on one of those tiny Northwest planes and fit my bass in the overhead storage in a regular gig bag. Make sure you don't have any tools in the pockets though, they will make you throw them away. I had my leatherman multitool in my top pocket and TSA flagged it in the X-ray machine. I had to step out of line, unzip my case, let them touch my guitar (I hated that part lol), and pull out my tools. It was either throw it away, or check your bass as luggage in a soft gig bag (I don't think so!).

Anyways, call the airline before you carry on your luggage. As was said before, many airlines will store the bass in the lockers that they flight attendants use.

I've seen a guitarist or two put their axe in the little storage area right by the door where you board.  You may also want to consider investing in a real deal flight case that can go in the cargo hold.  Gator sells a nice one or $299 if that's not too far out of range.  Compared to an Anvil case, that's a good price.
When you've done your very best, do even better.

Yes a bass guitar can be taken on a plane.  As folks has said already, make sure you don't have any tools and stuff in the gig bag.  Some airline hostess will ask if you'd like them to keep it in the closet and soem will let you just walk on with it and you put it in the over head....Yes, it will fit with extra room....I make sure no one puts anything in there with my bass though...lol...

If you feel uncomfortable call the airlines or check online...

Thank all for the info.

I will buy a flight case.

There is a Bass in Atlanta for me to play, but there is nothing better than your own.

This.

Ive flown around the world (literally) with my bass, and Ive never had an issue.  Sometimes the flight attendant will place it in a storage closet for you.  Most of the time, it has fit overhead.  In the cases that you have to fly the smaller planes where you have to get a tag to put on it and leave it by the door, be one of the last ones so it will be loaded on top.  Of my 5-6 yrs of flying, nothing has happened to my bass (praise God).
Praise Him!
