Hmmm, a band set-up, eh? Must be nice.  :-\

Ok, it isn't a band, but as soon as you have more than 1 instrumentalist, there is much more to explore with.

I would say first envision what you want to hear yourself play. The next step is to try to get yourself to play that.
Listen to bands would indeed help (I barely play in bands, but I find that many chops used by bands benefit my playing alot) ;)

Cool. I wasn't saying anything about the advice; I was lamenting the fact that we have no keyboard player.

I cain't afford 'might', maine. :-\

I'mma need it to be broken down so that it can forever be broke.  :D

PJ Morgan has an organ fingering DVD, I believe. It's how I learned to play the F blues scale (although, I haven't practiced it in a good minute).

I may have to try and find that one.

How much practice do you get in each week?

I say just go to the wood shed like everybody else has done and practice as much as you can. I know its hard to find time , but there is no other way imo. Get a teacher, get DVDs do whatever it takes. It took me years of just messing around on the keys and trying to imitate other guy's riffs to be able to do decent sounding riffs and improvise over chord changes.

If you really want, I can go though my dvd collection and find the best one for you. I think Kevin Connelly's DVD is focused on teaching you how to improvise and come up with your own ideas instead of just copying what he does.

I dont know what else to tell you.

Yeah man, just this past Sunday a guy thats been coming to church hopped on the keys, as our regular musician was out, and we were just groooovin! When you have someone to lay the foundation it frees you up to do all kinds of fills and runs....I wish I recorded us :(

As for a band setting, each person has the duty to make the other band members sound good by knowing their roles, not doing so much stuff that it takes away from the band and by complimenting each other.

I hear ya, doc. I've got that KC DVD, actually. I really don't practice the way I should (see 'Discipline' thread :-\).

But, I still a DVD that slows things down for actual beginners (how I'd love a Hanon Exercises DVD).

I think I might invest in the PJ Morgan Organ DVD (he may have a useful piano one, also). He breaks it down real nice and slow.

I totally understand about the practice thing. I Used to practice about 5 hours a day, now I only do about 5 hours a week if that much...

As for the PJ morgan piano DVD,( http://www.showmethat.com/shopping/pgm-more_information.php?id=19&=SID ) I think its supposed to be for intermediates, but I did learn a couple of nice arpeggios from that one, and he broke the fingering down nicely. His second organ one, I havent even really looked at yet so I cant rate it, but its for beginners.

I'm thinking about this one:http://www.showmethat.com/shopping/pgm-more_information.php?id=14&=SID

He showed the F blues scale in that one video clip and I learned it (and, can play it....kinda).

If the rest of the video is like that, I think I can learn a lot from it.

I have that one, Its broken into 2 sections. I skipped the runs part and learned the chord progressions (which are nice and I use all the time). I'll look at the rest of it when I get home and tell you what I think.

As for the F blues scale that you learned, can you do it in any other keys? Just working it out in other keys will help your playing tremendously. Not that I do that :D, but I remember RJ saying that he learns everything in every key before moving on to the next lesson.

I'd appreciate the review, doc.

I have taken it to other keys, but I play it best in F because of the video and I've practiced it most in that key. :D

You should be able to learn from it, even though its on organ. He does quite a few scales and breaks down the fingering and crossover points for all of them. He also gives you an exercise to build finger strength.

Uh, hold on!!! You must be some sort of genius! I have read many of your post and I don't recall coming across a post that wasn't on point, whether it was talking about progressions, chord qualities, etc. You mean to tell me that you dont play at all. Wow!!  If you dont want to play, cool, but if you have a desire, then you need to go ahead and "jump in the pool." At the very least, sit at the keyboard and play in a live situation with your headphones on. Thats really all thats left for you to do because you definently know what your doing mentally.

God BLESS you, bruh. I appreciate the kind words.

You know the saying, 'Those who can, do; those who can't, teach'? Sadly, that's me.

That's why I need to find a DVD that breaks down fingering and playing alternate rhythms in both hands.

I've played for my church (kinda) in the past. But now, as P&W leader, there's no way I could even think about playing and leading P&W @ the same time.

At the same time, I'm thinking about jumping on their during prayer and altar call again like I used to.
