Bass Player Problems - does anyone understand?

I would try to make the bass player feel like he's part of the team. So when you learning new music you ask what is he going to be doing so you'll know what to do to accomodate him. The wrong thing would be to make him feel like he's not good enough. But rather make him feel like his playing is a part of the process and you're making suggestions to help you out, not necessarily him. That's what I did with another bass player I played with and it works out nicely. After a while you start understanding his approach. I hope that makes sense.

Hello Drummers, I wandered over here from bass-land...

The only thing worse than a bad bass player is a really good one that tries to use everything he knows in one song!  You're right; the #1 responsibility is rhythem and cohesion.  The funny thing is (and you probably understand this HammerRock) it's the same either way... whether it's a drummer that won't stay in the pocket or a bass player.  I don't know your bassist, but my guess is he thinks he really tight!  Is he?  Even if he is, everybody needs to understand the concept of teamwork.  You can be the baddest musician in the world, but without teamwork you make yourself look stupid.  
So to sum it all up, he makes hiself look bad, and the spirit of pride has a hold on a lot of good musicians.  Pray that he becomes cooperative, and ask God to remove the pride and boastfulness.  Also pray that cat learns how to sow (so he can stitch some pockets on his gear  :lol: )

I just recently had the opportunity to hear the bass player I mentioned in the first post play with another drummer. Sure, he made a few mistakes, but overall he did real well. Maybe I just have to not focus on other people's mistakes and work on my own stuff (that drummer wasn't bad either!)

I have to work on not getting distracted by others mistakes; I hope I don't distract them with mine!

I was born a drummer, but the Lord called me over to the organ seat. I didn't play the drums for a whole YEAR!! God was really working and I'm glad for that. Now that I'm an organist, I like to set up the drummer. When I play drums, I am able to 'think' ahead of what they are doing and it makes the whole playing situation better.

NOW MY COLABORERS IN CHRIST LET ME PUT IT TO YOU LIKE THIS: IF THE BROTHER ON THE BASS IS NOT WILLING TO LISTEN OR LEARN, HE'S GOT TO GO! PRIDE GOETH B4 A FALL! SINCE YOU PLAY THE BASS, HE MAY NEED TO HEAR AND SEE THAT YOU CAN DO EVERYTHING THAT YOU  ARE EXPECTING HIM TO DO!! THE DRUMMERS AT MY CHURCH KINDA LOST IT WHEN I SHOWED THEM WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT ONE EVENING!! I TELL MY CHOIR ALL THE TIME: THE LESS TIME WE SPEND CORRECTING AND SOUNDING AWFUL, THE EASIER IT IS FOR THE CONGREGATION TO JOIN IN CORPORATE WORSHIP!!
