Have a stick bag handy. I was doing a fill on sunday and dropped one (first time). I picked something from my bag and started using it... it was a rod... I threw that one down and picked up another stick. This time it was a nylon head and I was using a wood head.

Bottom line... don't miss a beat, have fun, laugh, and don't sweat the small stuff!

That stick bag will come in handy but what I do is put some tape (maybe electrical tape) on the stick where I am going to be holding it. This helps me a great deal. I used to use gloves but I found out that they slip more with the gloves, especially if they have the smooth leather in the palm.

I have the gloves and I love them. They help alot. Try those. If that doesn't work try ZILDJIAN DIP sticks. They have a grip all at the bottom and they work GREAT. If none of that works then hold the sticks a little tighter!

I've been playing for 12 years now and the first four or five years I couldn't stop dropping my sticks; I was 12 when I stopped dropping my sticks, now I'm 19, so theres no real strategy to not dropping your sticks, It happens to the best drummers in the world; At the last DFJ retreat in Dallas, My favorite drummer, Marvin Mcquitty dropped his stick in the middle of a fill 8O , but it didn't take anything away from his talent! It happens to the best of us,
One day, I know I'll probably drop my sticks,
who knows!!!!!

 ..thats funny...but it does happen.  don't think too much.  just relax and play like you know how to.  i don't worry about it.  the thing i worry about is if i dont have more sticks to grab....

my bottom line...have more than 1 PAIR!!!!

I don't know if I'm special or if you guys just play alot harder than me but I haven't had that problem (yet, anyways). But our other drummer, he used to have that problem all the time! One time it happened so bad that stick left his hand and was so high up in the air that it hit the organist. The whole band froze and it was a mess. I have no advice, though, just wanted to share that story  8)
