blazin kit speed is a good thing to have, but its not like you broke if you don't have it, As for as shoutin music i can see where speed is vital, in this case you just gotta do some practicin outside of church and push your self back up to that level your used to, as for as just playin on songs, speed is nice, but not a necessity, now a days everybody wants to be blazin around the kit at the speed of light doing crazy rolls and what not like what they hear on Israels lastest project or any fred hammond live albums like pol ch. 2, but lockin into a tight groove can compliment the music just as well if not better than blazin fills.  Don't get me wrong, killer fills are hot, if they are used at the appropriate time.

something that works for me to icrease my speed is wrist control , also practing on down sufaces that do not have any rebound such as pillows
also praticeing drum rudiments ,start out slow and then work you way to fast speed. This is true advice that work for me why do u think they call me fast hands. I would  recommend u purchase a instructional video called speed contol by jim chapin and I promise u  your speed will increase
I wish u the best .The best thing and the most important thing u can do is to pratice pratice and pratice Good luck

I see what you are saying about shout music and speed. what helps is practicing outside of church. Speed isn't everything. I Love when Drummers have a great pocket. To tell you the truth, drummers get mad love when you play and have a tight pocket. I went through a phase where where I was trying to do fancy things around the kit. IT didn't feel good and the grooving part. Then I started just playing in the pocket. By playining in the pocket, you give music time to breath. Like for example, I din't know how many people are MInt Condition fans but Chris "Daddy" Dave played a song. Didn't do not one fill in the song until the very end. It just makes you wanna go, eeeeeuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhh, what did he just do

exactly how i feel - "less is more".   i'm always preachin' to the
youngers players that it is more important to know when NOT to
play.   it takes a lot of self control, but ultimately, everyone
benefits from it.
