Ghost notes? What the heck?!
« on: January 19, 2005, 04:16:39 PM »
Hey-
I just want to know if someone can explain ghost notes to me. I don't know what in the world one is or what it is supposed to sound like. Since I don't know what one is I've probably done it before and just dont know it. When it comes to reading music and stuff I'm lost so if anyone could help I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Big ups to the MI, I know what ghost notes are, but by  trying to explain them over the internet, I probably won't be able to fully explain them to where you get the full picture, so heres my recomendation.  Go to vicfirth.com and head to dom famularo's cyber lessons, he breaks it down to the T.  If your pc isn't able to stream the video clearly, then heres how i can say it without gettin all technical and breaking down the actual stroke.  Basically, ghost notes are softly played notes, often played on the snare, that fill in the open spaces of grooves, for example you can play triplettes with the 1 being play on the hats and the 2 and 3 being played softly on the snare and using that as a connective tissue for a groove.  Hope this helps somewhat.

For a really good example you can go to www.drummerworld.com and check out Bernard Purdie's page for his famous Purdie Shuffle. The ghost notes are all of those unaccented snare hits that are not on 2 & 4. But you can use ghost notes all over the set. If used ghost notes really adds to the groove.

What's the deal, folk?  I'm not a professional at this or anything, but I think I can explain to you what ghost notes are.  Ghost notes are those beats in between beats that are made to fill in the gaps.  They are basically softer strikes on the snare in within your pocket that you can hear but not as well as you hear the normal groove, if that makes sense.  If you think about it...they are what ghosts are.  A ghost is something you can't really see.  A ghost note is something you can't really hear.
