Growl sound from bass amp
« on: January 23, 2005, 05:09:56 PM »
What type of bass amp gives the best growl sound found on many gospel bass players which I think sounds really hot and different.  I have a Peavey 5 string bass, active pickups but my Peavey Combo 115 bass amp doesn't even come close to a growling sound.
Thanks out there for any direction for the sound I'm after.

Growl sound from bass amp

Peavey has made several 115 combos. The one I own has a very pure sound, and is downright powerful, about 350 watts with two speaker cabs. I like pure and i like power. I can make it growl but our band's style requires a deep, pure sound. However, the TNT 115 has a more distorted sound to my ears. I know plenty of metal and hard blues guys who like it's growl, but they have other factors involved in that growl. Now, just what do you mean by "growl?" I am guessing it is the same growl I had when playing metal. Getting that sound is more dependant up the type of strings you use, the set up of your bass, your attack on your strings, your EQ setting and certain effects. Try round wound strings, something bright sounding. Set the bridge close to the strings and set the strings low on the fret board. Go to a music store and ask to try out differant effct pedals. I don't know your circumstances or needs but there are plenty good ones for every budget and every ear. I liked Boss since they are built solid and are a well known readily available, and not too expensive product.  Be blessed.
