Music Theory
« Reply #20 on: April 21, 2005, 11:18:29 AM »
Hello everyone!!  I am new onboard, but I very familiar with the concept of music theory.  I first learn classical music at a very young age, and later got really involved in gospel music.  Theory is the essence of all good piano playing.  You can do anything you put your mind to.  I have had a lot of critics over the years, but know people as me to play for them.  I took theory about three years ago and plan to continue in my own person studies.  What ever you do don't let people determine your destiny, just because you can't play the song today doesn't mean you won't play tomorrow.
May God enrich your studies.
Encouraged,
Adamai

Me too!!!  I studied classical music for about three years before I was ever introduced to gospel.  My style of playing gospel music reflects my classical background.

Hey, I've read a lot of the post, and one of the thing I felt was missing was what some of the gospel patterns were. For instance, I know ALL of my chords (if you learn to read symbols like equations then you can put together any chord; as long as you nkow the sclae for that chord). But say I hear a song like "Victory is Mine", I found that its a I-II-VII-II-VII-II-VII-V-I, through half of knowing the melody, the key signature, and just guessing. So basically what I'm trying to get at is "what are some of the common patterns in gospel music, or just playing for church in general. :?:

Some basic chord progressions are:

ii-V-I

vii-iii-vi-ii-V-I (and any variation)

I-IV-V-I

Hope these help

From what i can contribute, I think diminished chords and could be use as passing chord to a destination.

For example: here is the cromatic scale:Do,Di,Re,Ma,Mi,Fa,Fi,So,Zi,La,Ta,Ti,Do

So if you want to move to a "Re"(a Two chord) you can first go to the Di and then the Re

If you want to Move to a "Soh"(a Five chord) you can first go to the Fih and then to Soh etc

Another way I Use Diminished is to mix it with the chord inversions but I thing The one i explained already is ok.
have a nice day.

Hello All,

I am new to the board.  I play by music.  I played for my small home church from the age of 12 to 35.  I started taking lessons at the age of 6. A new church has asked for me to play for them and I really wish I could play by ear.  In the meantime, I hoped that this forum might be an avenue to find music for the choirs.  It looks like I will have 3 choirs to play for. Youth, Men's Chorus and Inspirational.  I would sincerely appreciate any help from the board.  I have had friends that are musicians to fax me music, scan and email music etc.....

I also hope to be able to contribute in whatever way I can.

Here's some theory where you could start:

http://musicianswiki.com/index.php/12_bar_blues

You have to be able to read from sheetmusic for the following article:

Have fun and practice practice practice ;)
