Question from Leviticus
« on: October 21, 2011, 08:30:03 AM »
Anyone know/suspect what the term "unclean thing" means?

Looking for one or two all encompassing word(s),there's so many times this term is used,from sin,menstruation,disease-it's hard to convey the essence.

I'm not sure I understand the depth of the question.

Sin = unclean

Menstruation = unclean (or at least it used to be)

Disease = unclean

So it appears that "unclean thing" means something that isn't clean.

But I'm sure you were looking for something else, so... yeah, I'm lost.

I think he's saying how do you differentiate when it uses the same word?  I mean menstruation is unclean, but it's not sin, so therein lies the problem.

As for your question, I'd honestly have to do some more research starting with making sure that the same hebrew word is used in each reference, a lot of times that can give you clues as to how to tell the difference.

That was my first thought.

But I still kinda fell back on the fact that unclean is unclean. Maybe if I heard the context of the question... you know sometimes, you need to know how a person arrived at a question/line of thinking before you really get it. That's me. lol

Thanks kingrhollo!  So I would have to see which word is used for which scripture.   But I think that's a good place for doc to start to find what he's seeking.

Thanks everybody;I really didn't say much because I'm not clear about this myself.

A friend,whom I think really HEARS from the LORD,said he was impressed with the phrase  :touch not the unclean thing-keeps coming to him.

That's all he has-so far.

I had started some of the tips mentioned as well as reading Leviticus as well as pondering from memory the verses that came to mind.So;study,pray,wait-but it's wisdom to have a multitude of counsolers.

Is there any such thing as "unclean" for the CHRISTian?  I'm not talking about obvious sin or the things that defile.

I'm not a theologian, but I think that may vary depending on the custom the individual patterns themselves after.  For example, in the Jewish custom, I believe eating after sunset is against their custom.  I think they only eat meat that is Kosher as well.  Jews (I think) are also against certain foods coming in contact with other foods.  Anything outside of those principles may be considered unclean (In the sense of defile).

The thing about modern day Christians, many may not follow a specific custom or tradition, outside of the organization.  We are pretty much known for following the New Testament law.  Not because it doesn't apply or because we don't know about it, but a lot of the Mosaic (Old Testament) law was based on the custom of the people.

Hope that made some sense.

That's sort of where I am at.In looking at Peter in Acts 12@Joppa;LORD tells Peter not to call unclean what HE has cleansed.So;apart from defiling sin(s)-if we are washed by the WORD-what else is necessary?(other than attempting to live holy).

Good thing about questions/thoughts like this-gotta ask + listen to LORD.

Not to be/sound sarcastic or anything.  But the unclean thing was simply anything that God said was not clean.  He goes over it quite thoroughly.
