My boy is off the chains, I have video off him also, if you have never seen him live he is awesome, and very down to earth. Click on the link below.

Your boy has good chops, although the band gave him a solo at the end. I feel that it don't serve to music, it took away from the music. He gave a tight pocket but when he start soloing on one of the tracks, his technical flash was to busy for the track.

The other track I feel he sure of left off the double fill intro! Good player just need to stay in the pocket. Drummers need to realize that pocket playing get you work! Or a return call, chops are good but most of the time not require ( the groove is first )

So young drummer learn all the technical stuff you want, but the bottom line is it will not get you work in the industry. Remember this KISS

By the way as far as the band giving him a solo at the end, That recording was done live at jazz club and if you know a little about bands and live performances they usually feature one or more musicians during a certain set of song, be it a sax player, keyboard player, bass etc...  I can say this he must be doing something right to have played with well just about everyone, janet, musiq, lucy pearl, George Duke,UNCF tribute, and a dozen or so different jazz artist. I have talked to him on numerous occasions and he knows about keeping things simple, But when it is that time to solo he can, besides a solo is one's self expression through there instrument.

lilben,
bruh no your boy is bad I'm hating all I'm saying is that when you solo there a pulse still being generated. Some time in a solo we tend to put to much in it. Over do it! Plus you want to stay musical stay in the spirit of the song. All drummer need to do is hit accent and play the groove. Your boy is technical bruh!

peace

tayedrumguy, let me ask you have you even heard of lil john roberts before? If not go check the janet jackson velvet rope tour video/DVD. I understand what your saying trust me but I give props when they are due and he can teach me anything anytime about playing.

lilben, no offense taken, I just hate it when people can always take apart someone else's playing. We all are blessed with a God given talent and I am not a big headed person, I am my worst critic. The biggest issue I have always found with some drummers is the ego. Lets use what we have been blessed with and give God praise in doing it!

Yo, what is tayedrumguy talking about. Eversoclear and lilben, I don't think he understands who we're talking about. He's making assumptions off of a couple of clips (which by the way does lil john no justice). Lil' John is one of the modern day veterans of the drum industry. He's played with so many well known artists. Like eversoclear said, he's played with janet, george duke, as well as jonathan butler, kirk whalum, boney james, kindred, marc antoine, just to name a few. I understand what tayedrumguy is saying about the pocket...trust. I'm sure it wasn't only his chops that got lil john all of his gigs. Besides, this IS lil john. Dude can play 6/8 in a 4/4 and it wouldn't even matter to me. This cat's a living legend and has earned the right to do anything he wants when it comes to drumming concepts. He has earned a name for himself, so if he wants to play a whole song with just a bass drum, I'm sure the gigs will keep rollin' in (no offense tayedrumguy).
My goal as a musician is to be better than myself.

I don't know what this fella, tayedrumguy, is thinking but come on man. You sound like a cat who is slack on the chops. I honestly don't mean to be mean or come off wrong. This is a Christian site and I don't want to offend but, it sounds to me like you have some issues with your chops or the lack there of. Lil Jon has most certainly displayed his pocket presence over the years. I don't believe you know who this dude is but he is well known in the game. Try getting out more.

Yo, thanks for putting that clip of lil John on the board. I'm always looking to hear what the Vets are working these days. This clip is definite keeper. I just want to encourage all the drummers, keep working on your craft. God has blessed each one of us with and individual creativity...Much Love to y'all.

what up guys,
Cool, bros! I respect your opinions i'm not an instructor by know means. I make my living playing fulltime.  I'm 31 yrs old still young :D  but, to me younger cats seems to be just caught up on licks, fills. It more to it then that bruh! All I'm trying to do is help a few of you guys. When you help others, you help yourself. If you knew me you would never say I have a ego! I will give my shirt off of my back!

Trust me I have been toured around the world, I've played in place where people dream of just taken a vacation. I'm trying to give and help some of you guys out who are thinking about a career in music. Just because a guy isn't on a CD,Video, or some other exposed scene doesn't mean he isn't doing good. I'm taken care of my family off playing.

All I'm saying is change your approach to playing guys. Think musicial! Flash is good and all but it can lead you to the unemployment line too. I know I been there got that trophy! You want guys to respect your ablilty to groove first. Like ?uestlove, steve jordan, the cat in nashville playing country! See what I'm saying!

Don't mistake me learn the flash stuff! But keep it as a tool box, one day you might get to use it or not. When you go to a job you want to bring all your tools, because you don't know which tool you might need right? Lets keep it real here do you know how hard it is to play simple? Drummers and myself focus on the wrong things.

Here is a example! ( I'm guity of this!)
I brought the New breed video, It motivated me to learn some of chris licks right. Whats the first thing I do? Soon as I went to the gig, I started throwing in his licks. Then when the sound engineer give me a cd I find that I wasn't not thinking or playing musicial. I was selfish I just wanted to do my thang.

I hope this help someone start thinking musical. Let your ear tell you which cymbal to hit. Not because I just brought a new AAX so I better crash it, it might not fit that partical song! I pray someone listen to what I'm saying and one day think back and say, some guy on the net told me think musical.

Hit me back!
love you guys in Jesus
