Jaco Pastorius on "Havona" from Weather Report's "Heavy Weather" album. I've listened to thousands of bass solos but I think the one Jaco did on this tune is the best I've ever heard.

Well, it's really hard to pick just one...I don't know that I can use the word favorite, but the baddest bass solo known to man is Willie Weeks on the "Donny Hathaway Live" album.  The whole album has some serious groove goin' on, but the last track "Everything is Everything" gives Willie a nice 4+ minutes to really stretch out...and then to think he threw that stuff out there in 1970...Willie Weeks, y'all!

Then I'd point you to Brian Bromberg...his album "Wood" is intense!  One bass-only piece on there is his rendition of Miles' tune "All Blue" and he really rips it up.  His tone is amazing and so fluid and he's got quite a bag of techniques...sliding harmonics, lots of percussive hits, and then to think he's doing all that on an upright bass (of course, with low action, but still...).  I mean, give it up for that man!

All the choices listed are hot.  I love Jaco and Victor, but I'm guessing most of us have heard that stuff so I'm just trying to offer some fresh selections.  Peace!

Nice picks, Dan!  Have you heard the live renditions from the Ozell tapes?
