What kind of electric guitar do you play?
« on: December 19, 2004, 04:53:26 PM »
I have two that I play almost equally. A Fender Stratocaster and a Yamaha Pacifica 312. The Strat is great for it's bluesy tones and clean rythym, while the Yamaha is good when I "hot rod" my leads and when it just needs a humbucker! I haven't  moded any of them yet,but the Yamahas getting a makeover after the first of the year. I  tune them both down a half of step so I can match my voice,if I need to sing high,I stand on a ladder.  I strung the Yamaha with Power Slinkys, and they really feel great, while the Strat gets hybrids,.009-.046. lately i have been playing a mexican telecaster.  the last few years i was playing a gibson blues hawk and a jay tursor hollow body both with flat wound 11 gage strings.  in a move to strengthen my chops i got the tele and put on 9 gage strings in an attempt to mess with my comfort zone of playin heavy strings.. i cant put the tele down im flying on it compared  to before.  and as for me-i sing no matter what ..for better or for worse.

I have a Peavey Wolfgang Special, both pickups have been tapped.  I also have a 1993 Am. Tele w/ a Seymour Duncan Lil' '59 (also tapped), and a Series 10 LP copy I play slide on, which has an all-Carvin set up--tuners, hardware, pickups, etc.

GHS Boomer 10's on the Peavey and Tele, and Dean Markley 11's on the LP copy (they have a wound 3rd string--very bottleneck-ish tone!).

Zdubs,my straocaster is made in Mexico,I really like ,it plays better than the '78 American model I had years ago.The Yamaha in the neck position sounds more like a Strat than the Strat!

Most of the times for Sunday service I play a Yamaha AES-502 hollow body w/P-90 pickups or a Squire Pro-Tone '69 Thinline Telecaster(semi-hollow), because of the sound we, as a music ministry are going for, I feel like a hollow or semi-hollow guitar works the best.  but @ home I also play a Godin Solidac and a Dean Avalanche 7-string.   I've taken the 7-string to rehersal but I've never played it during service.  Are there any other 7-string players out there?

My guitar & equipment

I use a Fender Cyclone with a Tex-mex single-coil strat pickup (neck) and an Atomic Humbucker (bridge).  I pump the guitar through an RP 50 into a Crate 212-120 watts.  I get a great sound soft or loud.  I have xtra light strings and the bridge set up for fast action.  Past the 12th frett I can get good action at the A and A# but much past that is a struggle. For the price it is a good working combo.

I also have a Martin D 16 with fishman electronics under the saddle.  This baby I love to play on some of the older gospel songs.

So, I have a very good range of selection from contemporary gospel to bluegrass gospel with my eqyipment.  Sometimes I am ripping out some hot leads on my Fender or flatt picking on my Martin.  Either way, I have a blast.

I have a 1973 Fender Telecaster - all stock.  It's a bit (?) on the tinny side, but it's a blast to play.  I have had to replace the bridge (was breaking too many strings), and the volume pot - but other than that, I haven't modified anything.  Though I'm thinking a Humbucker might tone down some of that tinniness...  It's also a heavy beast - must be made from the heart of a swamp ash or something.  Sometimes my shoulder gets a bit sore from standing with it for hours on a Sunday, but the sustain is crazy - I'll put up with a sore shoulder!

I also have a Martin accoustic-electric (one of those new-fangled kevlar-bodied ones), and a Epiphone Zephyr Blues Deluxe hollow-body electric that my new husband bought me for a wedding present.  Isn't he sweet? (Actually, I seem to be playing this one more than the Tele, recently, unless the music calls for something with the effects pedal.  Strange about that....)

Thanks again  JayP!

For my electrics I play an American Std. Telecaster -'90s I believe- fitted w/ SD Nashville Studios.  This is the p/ups Nashville session player Brent Mason invented.  It's fat, funky, with loads of sustain.

I also play a 50's reissue Am strat, and a lesser known Eggle Los Angeles strat used for my Eric Johnson tones.

For my acoustics my main axe is a Larrivee DV-09.  I love the big sound of the dreadknots.  Also play a Taylor  grand auditorium 8- series (814?),  a Martin OM, and a Takamine nylon electro.

Playnig only 5 years, I've been blessed with the gear I'm using.  It's top notch.  Our ministry's identity is in music and the performing arts.  We move w/ the spirit of exellence and so I have some large shoes to fill.

For the beginning player I suggest you spend no less than $500 for a guitar ( acoustic or electric), this guitar will grow with you as you improve.  In other words, buy the best guitar that you can afford.

Oh, I almost forgot.... I also play a Kamaka ukulele from time to time.  Living in Hawaii you gotta play some uke.

Aloha and God bless.

Oh great, you live in Hawaii, and it's 5 degrees here

I'm kidding.  I was watching a thing on volcanoes the other day, and it's absolutely beautiful there.

That's awesome, though.  VERY NICE setup for only playing five years.  When I was 5 years in, let's see... I had my Am. Tele, but was playing through a Crate head (tube pre, solid state output--can't remember the name), and a Lney 4x12 (same one I have today).

God has blessed you--and your climate!

I mainly play a Schecter C-1 classic it has a set neck with 2 seymour duncan humbuckers, a 59' in the neck position & a super distortion in the bridge she sustains beautifully & has a nice full tone, my other two are a strat copy that I built w/ 3 single coils & a charvel jackson I restored after it was burned up in a pawn shop that was hit by lightning. it has a humbucker & 2 single coils (hss) (all jackson).... they all sound very good thru my hot rod deville~~~~
