iPhone Bass Practice tool
« on: June 21, 2010, 03:42:04 PM »
So I took advantage of the fire sale they are having on the iPhone 3Gs and turned my iPhone 3G into a practice tool. Here what I put on it:

Fretboard Visual Chord & Scales
ReBirth Drum Machine
Intua Beatmaker
Sonoma Wireworks FourTrack recorder
BlueFire Field Recorder

Ed Friedland Bass Method and Working Bassist
Stephen Richter Complete Bass Method
Josquin des Pres First Bass
Ableton Live Intro drum loops. I use iTunes as a sample and loop librarian. Since I wasn't concerned about space, I copied my loop library onto my second iPhone. This is so sick: I pick a loop, hit repeat, and I have a drum track, with fills, to practice to endlessly!

I use a 1/8 mini plug - 1/4 plug to connect to my amp or PX5D. I can also patch it into a mixer to provide a backing track when we rehearse and the drummer doesn't show up. The field recorder app is great for capturing ideas on the run. The iphone is surprisingly sturdy, so I keep it in my assessory bag that goes whereever I go.

where'd you get these?  Are they available over iTunes or did you just load your CDs or DVDs to iTunes and push them to your iPhone?

I have gotten into the habit plugging the 1/8" plug into my PX5D and either my iPod or my iPad.  If I can get instructional DVDs on my iPad, I would just be totally out of control.

I picked up Ed Friedland, Josquin des Pres and Stephen Richter through Amazon and ripped the CDs in iTunes.
I use a couple of different programs for music composition that use mp3, wav and aiff files, which iTunes keeps organized.
Now that I have the spare iPhone, having all my audio files in one library, on one device, makes it easy to search for a particular style of beat.
The repeat function in iTunes is a big help, because I can loop any of the samples for practice.

Yes, I am aware that iPhone 4 is coming out, which is why they are having a fire sale on the 3Gs. I have already updated my 3G and 3Gs to iOS 4.

I'm not sure when but I think I'm just going to get a Windows Mobile or Android OS phone. That flash and playble file types is a big deal for me. Just waiting for the right phone to come out. I like standards on phones as far as hardware and software.

Yeah I feel you on the Flash problem with iPhone, but most of the video I want to watch is available as a channel on youtube, so I'm good. Anything else, I convert to MP4 anyway. One of the features I am exploiting on the iPhone is the fact that it plays AIFF files as it would any other song. What does that mean? You can go on dozens of sites and download AIFF drum loops for free, which you can use as drum tracks during rehearsal or just practicing. Most importantly, once I get bored with a particualr drum loop, I have thousands of other loops to choose from. I know the iPhone is not everyone's "cup of tea", but I'm thrilled with mine. Now that I have one that I can use exclusively for music composition and practicing, I love it even more.

now are these options available to anybody like me who keeps music separate from their phone? even maybe via iPod Touch?

All the apps I have on my iPhone work on the iPod Touch as well. There are a lot of free apps for audio recording, but not ReBirth, Beatmaker or FourTrack. If you don't want to buy  or use any apps, using iTunes or an iPod with repeat song works great with Apple loops or any other compatible loops. I wish that the CD's that come with bass books didn't have a count in, cause it messes up playing the loops with pausing for the track to start over.
