Transposing Music
« on: March 03, 2005, 01:54:46 PM »
This one is for all of you music theorists out there. My question is if it is possible to transpose a song written on the piano to the guitar. I am not that deep into theory yet, but from what I have read so far it seems somewhat possible to do. It may not sound exactly like the original piece because of all of the right and left hand stuff, but can't the guitarist pull off a song without having a pianist present. The reason I am asking is because our church doesn't have a regular pianist so I am responsible for providing the majority of the music (along with a tight drummer I found). Most of the songs I want to play I either have to muddle through trying to pick them out or look up the tab, and if the pianist in the song I am trying to learn isn't using standard chords (not sure what the terminology would be) it's hard for me to figure it out. So I have a couple of other questions. 1) If I find the chord progression for a song and I play mainly the progression for the right hand what about the left hand stuff? 2) Do I need to combine the right/left hand chords and play a different chord on the guitar? Maybe this is a dumb question, but it's been on my mind ever since I started playing Gospel music, because you can't find chords or tab to most Gospel songs, and I'm not talented enough to figure this stuff out by ear. Thanks in advance
Steel

I know how frustrating it is to try and find the chord charts for the guitar.  If you have (or are yourself) a strong singer to carry the melody, then you just need to play basic chords.  If you are trying to play with a pianist, you don't have to play every note that they play.  We have the same situation at the church where I am the worship leader.

I am putting a site that might help you find some of the basic chord arrangements for gospel songs.

This site is great for anyone to help learn the songs.  The main thing to remember is, God is your audience and he hears only what is in your heart.  Keep up the good work and I hope this helps you.
