What yall know about Doobie Powell...
« on: March 10, 2005, 12:53:15 PM »
I dont hear alot of yall saying anything  about Doobie Powell.

The man is one of the best drummers out there.  If you have kim burrell everlasting life-cd look at the liner notes, thats doobie kickin( if yall did not know).

Also on bass on that album (everlasting life)  is the-man Joel smith, he is nice on bass and on drums.

Doobie  is also on the latest Twinkie clark cd along with joel smith on bass - home once again live in detroit ( great cd).

But back to my man doobie, he also plays keys and can sing and has an ablum out.  He is the  Minister of music at his church.

-what yall think about doobie powell

Holla back!

thats funny i was just thinking the same thing bout doobie, Everlasting Life is definitely a classic album it changed the game for me...i was curious bout Doobie's project that he sings on...is he kickin set on that too? i'm sure whoever it is they hold it down, but ya'll right he is bananas i love to hear him play...our praise team is learning the 1st song off the twinkie's new CD, and the licks is kinda difficult because of the off beat timing...i am definitely going to change it up.....but any suggestions?

the of licks that doobie does are difficult at first i suggest you count them out when u listen to the cd, his licks are based off of triplelets, so if you sub divide the tri-ple-let, he is usually hitting on the let...on doobies two projects he has two solos that he plays.

Man on dat CD dat was his brother Billy "Churchboy" Dat fool is crazy. Doobie was at my church a while back, singin' and playin' keys. Billy was playin' set der an his yunger brother was playin' da organ. But his yunger cousin was playin' Bass he SAID he had only been playin' 4 about 2-3 months, but he was almost better then some of these "seasoned" cats. But yeah dats was lil' bro billy kickin' da set on his CD. As a matter of fact, Billy got his own local CD out. He sent us a copy by mail. Man dat suck is wicked.

Doobie is definetly top 5 for me. Sick...... His brothers are nice as I don't know what as well. He is a killing MD too. His albums are tight. It's a wonder why they aren't more widely distributed. My church and his are in the same C.O.G.I.C jurisdiction. I see him a few times a year. Killing, Killing. sick on drums..... just sick

As Elvin Jones is to Jazz, Doobie Powell is to gospel.  When Elvin stepped to any jazz set or session you could tell it was him by his signature triplet feel and stlye.  In addition, his time with the fills that he did was swingin' so hard! The same thing applies with Doobie.  You can tell it's him when you here him play and catch those sixteenth e's and ah's (1e&ah, 2e&ah,etc.)  He also makes that splash and first tom float like a butterfly and sting like a bee! You can tell he really spent some time listening, practicing, and getting HIS voice through the set by himself.  That is what all musicians should want for themselves.  Not saying that there is something wrong with taking a lick here and there from another drummer.  But, take that lick and try to find your own voice through that lick.  You'll be suprised at how sick YOU are! 8) !

Doobie and his brothers are definitely a force to be reckoned with.  I usually chill with them whenever I go to the COGIC conventions.  They are also some of the most humble brothers around.  And I saw that somebody wrote "churchboy" by billy's name.  Is he on here as churchboy?  Just curious.

I remember seeing Doobie for the first time on Bob Jones.  He had a Hightop fade with some big glasses.  He was playing with his father band back in 97.  He was slaming back then.  His father was playing great is thy faithfulness and his father gave him some space to do some licks, and he did this double, triple thing and it was so clean.  So I knew back then the dude was nice.

Seven,

Doobie gets nothing but love.  He is a beast.  He was one of the drummers that took drumming in gospel to another level.  For me he was a drummer that was heard on Kim Burrells album, but did not take away from the vocals.  That is what made Kim's album  a classic. The fusion of Gospel and Jazz at its best.  Stay Blessed, Nate J.

soldieranointed, to answer your question,

Doobie Powell's out of CT.  Has 3 CDs out locally.  The Offspring, The Offspring Vol. 1, and Can't Be Stopped. (I may be wrong about the name for the first album.  Got to cdbaby.com.  You can hear snippets of his past albums.  You may need to contact his church directly to order copies.  Known to be sick on drums, also on the keys.

His brother is Billy Powell, aka Churchboy.  He has a local CD out called Churchboy as well.  He's sick on the drums as well.  Their other brother, Kevin Powell, plays mostly organ and keys, if I'm not mistaken.

But the Powells are a talented and blessed family.  I've always thought the same thing, why they're not more widely distributed.  But that's a management thing.  Also, it may be by choice.  Not sure.  Whatever it is, good music comes out from that family.  I may have to buy the Kim Burrell album, though it's so old.  If Doobie was killing it on that like people say, those licks are still relevant and applicable today.

What makes his drumming stand out is his placement.  He has a good sense of space and knows how to accent very well. He punctuates the music well. He can do some nice rolls just with the snare and hi-hat.  And he's always in the pocket.
