Ok, I've seen the talks about Hammond Organs.  We have an old hammond sitting in the back of the church getting a little dusty and one of the keys popped off so my Pastor decided to get another organ.  Well the organ he got was a Roland organ.  What's the difference in Hammonds and other organs???  I mentioned to a friend of mine who is a M.O.M. and he just dropped his head and said, "Yall need to get your Hammond back"....

well, the main difference is the TONEWHEEL GENERATOR.  Ever since Hammond stopped making B3's etc., everyone (including Hammond) has been trying to re-create the sound.  If you have ever played a B3000, you know that it is a hard task. Now, Im not too familiar with the Roland organs, but I know its probably a Roland vk-77.  now Im sure they just try to use a virtual tonewheel system, and you can probably tell that its virtual, or electronic.  The tonewheel system is just what it says.  Its a wheel inside of B3, C3, A100, RT3's that gives off Tones.  In Roland, Korg, and all that, there are probably Sound cards with tones in them, so its a re-created sound, and not the original Hammond Tonewheel sound.  the BEST "un-Hammond" organ is probably the DIVERSI organ by Voce.  Check that out, and take that Roland back.

Hello everyone

I have a question for all organists here. I Play the organ as well but i'm not familiar with all of the models of the hammond so that's where my question comes from....

Okay there is an organ on hammondman's avitar (I think that's the correct wor :oops: ) what model organ is that??? I can tell it's a hammond but the model??? I don't know. It's so odd because I can tell that it's a hammond because we have the exact same organ at the church I play for but I still don't know the model...


Could someone please let me know????? :oops:

Hammondman's avatar seems to be a C series organ.  In order to really tell I would have to have a close up picture to see if it has percussion or vibrato.  It could possibly be an A model if it has self contained speakers.  I like that white color though!!

THE OLD ORGANS HAD TONEWHEELS IN THEMM LIKE A CAM IN A CAR, THESE ORGANS WERE VERY EXPENSIVE TO BUILD, THEY WERE HANDMADE...EACH ONE OF THEM. THERE'S A SOUND ASSOCIATED WITH THEM THAT EVEN DIVERSI CAN'T GET TO. THEY SOUND THE BEST THOUGH, AT LEAST A TIE WITH THE HAMMOND B4 PC PROGRAM.
THE WHITE HAMMOND IN MY ATAVAR IS A WHITE C-3, IT'S JUST A B-3 WITH A FULL CABINET, THE A-100 SERIES WERE B-3'S WITH SPEAKERS IN THEM, FOR THE HOME..THE C-3'S WERE BUILT FOR CHURCHES, AND THE B-3'S WERE SUPPOSED TO REPLACE THE PIPE ORGANS, BUT DIDN'T FLY. BLUES CLUBS AND BLACK CHURCHES PICKED UP ON IT THOUGH...
NOW THEY CAN REPLACE THE TUBES WITH SOLID STATE, (LIKE THE TV SET) AND IT GIVES A SHARPER SOUND. THERE'S NOTHING LIKE THE ORIGINAL HAMMOND ORGAN...THEY JUST DON'T MAKE THEM ANYMORE. GET THE KEY FIXED ON THE HAMMOND...IT'S VERY WORTH KEEPING!

We have a hammond B3 at our church. What I want to know is what is so special about the Hammond B3. I hear alot of organists talking about the hammond B3. There was even a guy a couple of years ago who said that he would give free lessons if we would allow him to just play on it for a little while.

The only thing that separates the B3 from the C3 and A100 is the 4 legs...nothing else, they all sound exactly the same.  I would like an A100 because they are a little smaller, and have internal speakers...but thats just me.  Its just that when people see Hammond, they think B3 just becuz...there is nothing special about them...

For Hammond model organs, just remove the back panel of the organ and look on the tone generator and their should be a serial labe with the Hammond model# and the serial number of the organ.  The serial number will tell how old the organ is.  With the leslie most leslies have a little black metal tag on it with the serial number and the model type.
I think there is a difference between an A100 and B3, because I had been playing an A-100 for about 15 years, and it sounded pretty good, but I wanted to try a B-3 because I heard rumors that it was better, and I is.  I've gotten so many complimants from this new B-3 than any of the A-100 in fact I hardly ever got any.  So if your looking for the best sounding and looking organ I would go with the B-3.

This is good info.  I always knew there was a difference in the B-3 because Twinkie Clark always requests B-3 whenever she plays anywhere.  She came to the U of I and we had to hunt down a B-3 for her........and she made that thing sing!

No offense, but that is the biggest rumor among organs.  All of these organs were hand made thus, each one has their own "personality".  People are just so used to B3's for some reason.  But I played a C3 two weeks ago and it was KILLIN most B3's I have ever played on.  So its the maintenence of these organs.  EACH and EVERY one of these organs has the same pieces inside of them, and are CAPABLE of sounding the same.  They just need to be PROPERLY cleaned and cared for like a car.  PLEASE have your organ checked on once per year, and dont let the drawbars stop working, because I learned this summer in a class that that can get to be very expensive if you let it sit too long.  So please dont be racist towards the a-100's C3's RT-3's etc...They are all capable of sounding the same...JUST TAKE CARE OF THEM AND TELL THE ORGAN REPAIR MAN HOW U WANT IT TO SOUND...HE CAN DO IT!!!

Hammondman, I love your white C3!  What are you using for Leslies?

Also, the new B3 (from Hammond-Suzuki) sounds good on recordings.  I would like to hear one live.  Does anyone know the price of one of these?  I have read $20,000!  (Which means that I will probably never own one.)

Hello everyone I'm new to this website.  Just a little intro....I'm from Virginia and I've been playing the organ/keyboard for 8 years now.  I just wanted to make a comment about the difference between the B3 and C3.  Dooley is right the B3 and C3 are basically the same except for the look.  The cabinet is different and B3 are more portable than C3s.  (Not saying that B3s are portable organs).  The B3's legs allow them to be a little bit more portable.  Most music stores if they rent out organs they usually rent out B3s because of the smaller cabinet.  I've played on B3's, A3's, C3's, B3000s, XB3's, XC3's and by far the best sounding organs are B3's and A3's.  Out of those two I think B3's are the best.  I really can't explain it but nothing can beat a good B3.  I just feel more comfortable on a B3.  When I was first learning how to play I learned on a C3 and now I'm playing for my uncle's church and we have B3 and musicians just love coming to Mt. Sinai and playing on our B3.  A3, B3, and C3 don't really have much of a different sound they just have a different look.  And it's just personal preference on which one an organist likes.....but most organists prefer B3s.

Also, NEVER replace your old classic hammond for these new expensive lower class midi organs.  They are made to last only a short while so you can keep buying more or keep getting it fixed.  Classic hammonds were made to last forever.  These new hammonds are made from pressed wood chips (like a portable table).  The classic hammonds are made from solid wood.  Give your classic hammond a major tune-up, get a good leslie with a bass amp, and leave these new X-Hammond models or Roland GT whatever whatever alone.  

Hey hammondman that organ is tight.  I've been looking for a white organ.

Hammond 2300 - Name "Concord"

Not mehcanical tone generator (no tone wheels), family built from about 1972 to 1980.  Top of line, priced in the range of about $12,000 -$14,000.  Full console.  Used, today about $600.

My impression is that these organs are unreliable and parts are hard to find.  However, if the price was right, and the organ worked, it might make a fine living room instrument for the family.

The Concord DOES have a mechanical tone generator. (And a full set of drawbars, etc), in addition to synthesizer boards and such.
