Reggie Young Fodera
« on: November 19, 2013, 08:59:39 PM »
Many of us bass players bought Smith basses due to the fact Reggie played them. He sorta made the Smith sound famous in Gospel. Now that he has gone to Fodera, I wonder if people will buy Fodera basses now for Gospel. I currently have 3 Smith basses, and Reggie Young sound was the main influence in getting Smith. I now have a Fodera on order and I am excited to see what that can bring to the table.

Funny, the first person I heard play a Smith was Fred Hammond lol. The first person I heard play a Fodera was Victor Wooten. I'm sure a lot of people would like to buy a Fodera, but Fodera's outstrip Smiths by a couple o' grand, especially for the signature models. I think Vic's goes for like $10-14k??

That said, I watched Bass Club Chicago demo a six string Foderal Imperial w/stock Pope/Fodera electronics.....blew my mind! But I'm not getting one anytime soon....

And I'm a big Brubaker fan, so if I'm spending upwards of $5k on a bass, it'll be a Brubaker....

Would love to own one but the price and build wait times make me love my Laklands so much more. I'm grateful for what I have. If I have $5k-$10k to spend on a bass, I'd much rather pay down the mortagage on my home!

I would fear having a bass that expensive stolen from me.

Several good insurance firms that insure instruments for working musicians.  This is important, because most homeowners or renters insurance policies do not cover instruments that are used professionally.

I pay about $300/yr to insure my 6 basses and 2 amps and cabinets, plus one son's 2 basses  and the other son's 3 guitars and 2 amps, plus other miscellaneous accessories (effects, drum machine, etc).  I use Heritage.  Chubb Group is another good one.

Sure can.  I should also point out that my instruments are insured at replacement value, not what I paid for them.  Replacement value is a lot more than I actually paid for most of my basses.

Since I took this thread way off topic, let me try to bring it back.....

As far as Smith basses go, they are all over the church scene in the Detroit area.  My first 5-string was a Ken Smith Burner.  Mainly because the guys I saw play at some of the larger churches played what I later found out were much higher end Ken Smith basses.

On one hand, I have only twice bought basses specifically because of an artist I liked (Stanley Clarke in both cases).  But by the time I made either of those purchases, I was very solidly placed in the brand (Alembic).  When I got my Alembic Stanley Clarke Signature Bass, it was my second Alembic.  When I bought one of Stanley's basses from him, it was the 5th of 6 Alembics I have purchased over time.

Ironically, I also have basses similar to two Music Man basses that Louis Johnson used to play.  I did not, however, buy those because of Louis.  I bought them because they were similar to my first really good bass.  I had a '79 Music Man Sabre as my only bass for 20 years.  I sold it to buy the Ken Smith Burner that I mentioned earlier.  Mistake.  Not that the Ken Smith was bad.  It was ok.  It's just that the Sabre was all that and I never should have parted with it.  After a while I decided I had to find one to get back to my roots and found two.....and a Music Man Stingray.

Not sure I'd drop the kind of coin involved in getting a Fodera just because someone I liked switched to them.  For example, if Stanley Clarke suddenly switched to Fodera, I'd still have my Alembics and Music Man basses.  No need to switch.

I am convinced that 85% of a persons sound has to do with the skill level and the other 15% has to do with the equipment. I have seen some cats play Ibanez, Shecter, and regular ole Fender basses and they make'em sing.  Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with pattering your style or sound after another bassist. But for me,  I stopped long time ago trying to do other peoples sound and runs. In my humble opinion, if you can play, you can play. A boutique bass aint gonna make you any better. That 30 minutes a day you spend with that mid-range price bass is what will put you over the top. Especially if you play through the house system most of the time. I gurantee nobody will be in the audience critiqueing wether you playing a Smith or a Fodera. They gonna be like, "Man he making that Squire Talk".....lol....lol

I've had someone say similar after getting on their sub $100 keyboard. I do feel more inspired though when playing a good sounding instrument. Sometimes we buy new gear because they convince us that there is a new sound when you could probably get the same sound from your instrument with tweaks.
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

I bought a SBMM SUB Ray4 for $251 (w/discount). Bought an EMG MMcs pickup and BTS system for $60 on Talkbass. For $311 total, I have an instrument that rivals and plays just as well or better than basses costing 10x's more! It rivals my Laklands. And I tend to play it more than my Laklands. I can appreciate the expense, build detail and all the other things that come with owning a Fodera (and the like) but I just can't justify spending that amount of money on an electric bass. Especially in this day and age of expensive living. I'm not saying anyone is wrong for doing so. Just saying I wouldn't do it. Even if I hit the lottery. I have way more important issues than wanting to own a $5k-$10k+ Fodera! I mean really?!?!
