I have a Silvertone Revolver P-Bass style ax. It works for me. I have no complaints as to the quality or durability. I haven't had a chance to really crank it through a big amp to see if it holds its passive tone at high volumes though. I did crank it low once and it seemed fine... The tone is what it is, I don't have enough experience with other basses to know what to complain about, especially considering it has the p-bass style setup which is a bit more limiting tonewise.
I got it for $70 at a pawnshop cuz they like me there and I went there everyday for a week to check it out, hahaha :3 I'm in the same boat as you (drum>ukulele>guitar>bass), so I was really just looking for something with good action and half-decent reviews. I'd prefer the J-Bass model, but with a bit of distortion the p-bass thing is pretty fun. Also with some foam under the strings you can get a nice upright-bass thump.
The "real" bassists here will probably give you better recommendations.
