Quality used Bass Guitars for under $175?
« on: January 22, 2014, 05:17:01 PM »
Hey everyone,
New to this side of the forum. I'm a drummer/keyboardist and ready to expand over to the bass. I try to stick with one instrument, but I love them all! I'm tired of spending all of my time in Guitar Center plucking away, so I'm ready to go ahead and buy a decent bass and amp to practice on and maybe play in a rehearsal or two sometimes.

Now I'm not going to be a lead bass player anytime soon so I don't need the high end equipment you all may have, but just something 4 string that I can  get started on and still give me that quality and at least a little durability. Any suggestions on popular brands in this price range I should keep an eye out for?  Thanks
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!

I have a Silvertone Revolver P-Bass style ax. It works for me. I have no complaints as to the quality or durability. I haven't had a chance to really crank it through a big amp to see if it holds its passive tone at high volumes though. I did crank it low once and it seemed fine... The tone is what it is, I don't have enough experience with other basses to know what to complain about, especially considering it has the p-bass style setup which is a bit more limiting tonewise.

I got it for $70 at a pawnshop cuz they like me there and I went there everyday for a week to check it out, hahaha :3 I'm in the same boat as you (drum>ukulele>guitar>bass), so I was really just looking for something with good action and half-decent reviews. I'd prefer the J-Bass model, but with a bit of distortion the p-bass thing is pretty fun. Also with some foam under the strings you can get a nice upright-bass thump.

The "real" bassists here will probably give you better recommendations.

The Ibanez GSR 100Ex and Yamaha RBX 170,  go for around $179.00 new.  You can get Peavey Milestone IV at $169.99....add about$20.00 to your budget and you'll have even more choices.

Save up another $25 - 50 and go after a Squier by Fender Jazz Bass.  Cross "buy a bass" off your bucket list.

I owned an Ibanez GSR200 a while ago and found it to be a surprisingly good bass for $199.00.  I had another bass(Schecter, $750.00 on sale) and the Ibanez didn't come far behind it.  Go to "musiciansfriend.com" and read the reviews on it.  Also they sometimes have 20% off sales. They don't take out sales tax. I  kept it several years and sold it for $130.00. so you wouldn't lose a lot of money on it, even when you move up.  It had a good tone.  I guess they are of the same quality as when I had mine.  If you don't like it you can send it back within 30-45 days.

Be aware, though, that there are just going to be a lot of differences between a Schecter that costs $750.00 on sale, and a $200.00 Ibanez.  I mean that the Ibanez sounded good in comparison for a $200.00 guitar.

There is a guy on youtube that reviews a lot of inexpensive basses. Search youtube for maxproud, some decent info on his channel.

This.. Squire is making some pretty good budget basses. The best bang for the buck out there IMO.
