I think I want to learn guitar...
« on: March 17, 2014, 10:52:34 AM »
Hey fam,
At my church we have 3 keyboardists, including me.  Unfortunately, we don't rehearse for Sunday's praise and worship, so we normally get a song list on Sunday morning, and we figure out who knows what song best and what role we're going to play for each song.  Sometimes, it works out great.  Other times, it feels like we're all playing the same thing with different approaches, and it's a hot mess.  Recently, one of the keyboardists bought a new guitar.  I think he's been playing for a little while, but lately he's been bringing his guitar to church.  With him playing the guitar, our roles are more clearly defined, and our sound is MUCH better, even without prior rehearsal.  Often when he plays, I'll do a bass synth for many songs and it seems to round out our sound nicely.  It got me to thinking that I want to learn to play bass.  Fortunately, I have a bass at home that was given to my son (but he never plays).  I don't really know where to start, so I figured I'd ask you guys.
Most of you know me from the main lounge and know my story.  I've been playing the keys for about 10 years.  I used to practice a lot when I first started, but I don't practice much nowadays.  I'm self-taught, and I'm sure I've developed a lot of bad tendencies along the way.  With respect to that, I'd like to approach learning the bass in the right way.  I've got one kid in college and another one on the way, and 5 kids overall- so getting a private teacher may not work for me financially.  That said, can someone point me in the right direction to get started playing?
Thanks in advance!

LL as an experienced keyboard player, you have a great "heads up" on learning the bass.  You will have to, at first learn the mechanics of it (fingers on strings) As you learn that you can at the same time learn the notes on the fret board by calling out the notes as you play them.  It is important to get off to a good start learning the mechanics so that you won't have to unlearn things that end up blocking your progress.  There are so many good instructional sites on you tube, etc that you'll have little trouble finding free instruction.  Also, talkbass.com and studybass.com are good sites for learning.  There are many others.  Bass for Dummies(ignore the title)is a good book on bass.  Most of them(books, videos, etc) say that as soon as you master the mechanics, and learn some scale patterns, it is good to start trying to play with others.  God bless on your effort.

Oops,  seems that Studybass.com has changed.  I can't speak to the quality of the new site.

Thanks!  I've been told before that my experience on the keys will help me.  Hope that's the case.  While I don't want to rush things, I'm hoping that I'll progress quickly enough to do some basics at church within a couple of months.  I'm going to approach it like I did when I first started playing the keyboard- practicing the basics every day.  We'll see!

So, do you want to learn the bass guitar or do you want to learn the 6 string electric guitar??  ;D
Music theory is not always music reality.
