Praise and Worship Tips for Someone New to Gospel
« on: May 25, 2014, 08:32:20 PM »
Hello all, I am new to this forum and new to playing gospel music. I was raised Catholic, stopped going to church for a while during college years, and have recently return to a COGIC church with my wife. I have gotten in involved with music at church. So far it has been great and a lot of fun!

I have never really played gospel, but I have played a lot of old R&B (Motown, Stax, etc.) and Jazz. So gospel walking lines and the gospel feel have not been a problem to learn. However I am used to a very rehearsed setting usually with written music. We usually do one or two rehearsed songs each Sunday which have been going fine, but during praise and worship I never no what to expect. Like I said I prefer written music and playing by ear is one of my weaknesses. I am using this as a way to work on playing by ear, luckily praise and worship songs are usually simple.

Is this unpredictability common at other churches?

So far my strategy has been find the root by guesses the common keys they seem to like (E flat, D flat, A flat, etc.). Then hang up at the root and try to pick up the progression (probably involving I, IV, and V). Any one have any other tips?

JMac31,

Welcome to LGM and welcome to the Bass Forum.

I am not COGIC but have played at various COGIC churches over the years.  Your experience is pretty much exactly what I have experienced at COGIC church services.  It used to frustrate me to no end to have the music "plan" change like the wind.  I will say that over the years it has served to strengthen my ear.

I have always had a good ear for hearing what bassists are doing on my favorite recordings and then parroting that back.  Thing is, when you're playing live in a church setting, you have to listen to all the other instruments and figure out where and how you fit in.  That is quite a bit more difficult.

I don't play that often in church anymore (my son handles most of the work at my home church and I've cut back big time on my freelancing) but when I do, I follow the formula you describe in the last few lines of your post.....listen...figure out the key (or just ask what key) and root-4-5 until I can figure out how best to serve the movement of the song.

Peace,

James

Thanks James! I'll just keep doing what I have been doing and improve the ear in the process.

It's not just COGIC. It's been my experience that P&W style worshipping led by musicians are not structured in any way, shape or form. It's whatever they feel and songs run into other songs quite frequently. Sometimes songs I never heard before. I could never get used to it. I even asked the leader to record the songs for me so I could have some reference and can be ready but he never did. I am like you......prefer a structured environment with charts or recordings for reference. I can't work any other way.

Good point DWBass. I is not even so much that I do not know the exact songs, it is the fact I don't even know what songs they are choosing from. I can walk into church not knowing what songs will be called, but if I know they are coming from my repertoire that's not a problem.

But luckily the more I play with them the larger my repertoire becomes. By this time next year I shouldn't be a problem lol.

DWBass,

Very good point.  It is NOT just a COGIC thing.  The only church I have ever played in that is not prone to such "flexible" music ministry is my own home church.  And that is partly because two Sundays a month I am responsible for the music program and I insist on rehearsals and everyone knowing what will be played when.

How long have you been attending this church? Also growing up Catholic really puts you at a disadvantage at least if you grew up COGIC you would have grown up singing the songs already (especially those old but goodies)

After a while you learn what songs they like to sing, granted P&W know a lot of songs but there is a limit.

I have been at this church for a little over 4 months. You are right growing up Catholic I had never heard any of these songs, but as I continue going I am starting to learn more and more of the songs.
