Here's to hoping everybody is having a good day!
Yesterday I played my first ever Sunday Service as a piano player. I usually play bass or lead but our regular piano player was on vacation and she asked me to stand in for her. I spent the last 2 weeks prepping. Because I played bass on the songs previously, I knew the progressions and only had to figure out chord shapes. So I went to the key of C because it seemed that it would be the easiest key to play in. (I transposed, please don't shoot me

) I had the backup bass player playing all the bass lines and I just did basic major chords with a few 7 chords here and there. For the most part everything went good. Glory Glory Hallelujiah was kinda iffy but Jesus Promised went really good. I did He's Able for offering which went pretty good and we also did Every Praise, it could have been a little better. My preaching chords consisted of minor 1, b7, 4, 5 chords. That's all I could work out in the time I had to prepare. I went on yoitube to figure this stuff out but my hands were new to the chord shapes and so I did the best I could. Service went on as though our regular piano player was there so that's all that matters. But now I want to learn the instrument so that the next time it happens, I will be better prepared. Our regular piano player does hair so sometimes during revival I have to open up but I usually just do it from my guitar but it would be an addedbonusto be able to open up at the piano.
YouTube videos are ok but I noticed that most videos cut off just before they finish the entire lesson and want you to subscribe to a website. So I'm in the market for a set of DVDs that will teach me correct chord forms, scales and also how to apply these to gospel music. I looked for some stickies in the forums here but couldn't find any. Maybe I used the wrong search terms. And somebody may be asking, why not get your regular piano payer to teach you? There are two reasons, she is too busy and I want to really learn to play without the transpose button. No disrespect o the transposers but in my playing yesterday I felt like it would have been easier to just modulate the keys without pushing the two buttons necessary for transposing. It caused an not so pleasant pause in the music. But anyway any help, links, etc will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a million!
