I feel it is good to be able to play both ways. You want to have as many techniques in your tool bag! So you can pull them out when needed!

I use both techniques also. When I wanna play a solid back beat, I play heel down, but to do fills and doubles/triples I pick my heel up. To play softer, I just use my shin muscles and control how I strike the pedal.

Also one other good thing is to RELAX
, allow rebound. Buddy & Dennis both can play the kick with out the spring on! Tensing up is bad! Also alot of drummers I feel over tighten there pedal. I feel the pedal spring suppose to give a little resistents, it suppose to feel natural just as holding a pair of sticks.
