Title: Better Than Dennis...
Post by: MaestroDivine on March 04, 2006, 04:22:35 PM
I need some more drummers to listen to. I'm interested in hearing guys that YOU think have surpassed the great Dennis Chambers...

I've already heard the names Thomas Lang, & Virgil Donati. However, I'm sure some of you guys know of some other guys that you feel are plain superhuman on the set. I just really miss listening to a drummers, and being like  :o :o :o :o :o :o :o ! I'm looking to hear that next drummer that'll make me feel like retiring from the set, before the dust's of insecurity and intimidation settles, and I re-double my efforts.

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!

If you somebody mentions Aaron Spears, Spank, Chris Coleman ... re-read the first line of this post. If you still post one of those those names, or someone like that ... I will blast you with my laser eye beams!  :o

Okay, thanks guys!!

I don't know about blowing Dennis Chambers away, but I can get you pretty close:

1. JoJo Mayer (as mentioned earlier)
2. Akira Jimbo
3. Mark Mondesir
4. Benny Greb
5. Horacio "El Negro" Hernadez
6. Rodney Holmes
7. Will Kennedy (people really sleep on this cat)
8. Antonio Sanchez (hmmmmm? borderline)

I like his style. He has personality too - which makes his playing more interesting...

Which is interesting, considering Chris Dave is my fav, and he's often stone-faced whiling playing. Or just plain stoned...

Not...

They are doing double and triple-stroke rolls leading with either foot which already shows superior control  in sengle pedal movements. Do your reseach. As well Thomas and Virgil do complicated patterns on the hi hat either foot as well which is harder to incorporate than bass pedal rhythms which again, shows superior control. Lets keep facts facts. NO slight to Dennis Chambers' abilities but the fact is these guys have better control and technical prowess than he does.

Opinions not based purely on emotion, would be appreciated.

Musically I think Vinnie has proven superiority. Technically I don't know if he can match their independence but outside of the indpendence/speed I think that he would hold his on. Seeing those guys go at it Vinnie, Thomas Lang and Virgil would take creativity to new heights. I think that they all would have to mentally go past the physical which they all ahve a fair share of. Virgil probably is the sickest thinker. Vinnie is the wise one and Thomas is a blend of both so he is the "wild card." The fact that all three compose and read on another level just leaves you at creativity out side of obviuos physical attributes. Vinnie is older and doesn't seem to push the speed thing as much. Virgil and Thomas are still doing 6 hour practice sessions. Thomas Lang obviously has them on the conditioning factor so then it goes back to the mental.

True...Jojo, has an amazing fun feel to his playing, you can just tell that he is really into it, which relates to my feelings on his playing. I have shown many, many, many clips of many drummers, to my wife & parents and the one that stood out the most to them was Jojo. So, to me that says something too. These 3 are all amazing musicians, I dont think you can go wrong with any of them.

My humble opinion:

1. Thomas Lang
2. Jojo Mayer
3. Virgil Donati

Thomas and Jojo, are my fav right now....I dont know why, they just got me hooked.

God Bless.

Hey, don't I owe you a clip?

Frankly, I like Jo Jo better than all three. I guess he seems to be having a lot of fun with it. Virgil seems to be a little to single-minded/ambitious to have any fun. Don't know enough about Thomas yet.

I don't know, man. As far as I'm concerned, he's creatively & musically the most impressive drummer, I've ever heard. That being said - he doesn't seem to be as obsessed with technique as Donati, Lang & Mayer. I mean, he clearly does have it ... however, those guys are supreme virtuosos!

As far as listening - give me Chris Dave, anyday. His bag of tricks is stupid - and he's very experimental. I love that. That's exactly how I am!

There are a lot of good ones out there but none at the level or status of Dennis. I think it will be a minute before anyone rises to that level. Buddy Rich, Dennis Chambers and I think Steve Smith, Vinne Colaiuta and Dave Weckl as well are at a level not many individuals achieve.

I'd also like to add...

Everyone in that has been mentioned in this post, plays a double-pedal. Chris doesn't, and has a relatively small set-up compared to these guys.

I REAAAAALLY log that. Thomas Pridgen was like ... his favorite drummers were, "Dennis Chambers, Tony Williams, Dave Weckl & Chris Dave"...

I thought it was a testament to Chris Dave's ability for him to mention his in the same breath with those dudes.

Chris is a diligent student, for real. I've seen him go head to head with Dennis - and I didn't see where Dennis was superior to him, at all. Fire was coming from his hi-hat .. and he was playing these crazy syncopated rhythms with it.

In any case ...

I don't have to convince anyone that I like Chris Dave, lol.

Which is interesting, considering Chris Dave is my fav, and he's often stone-faced whiling playing. Or just plain stoned...

JO is definitley in that same league as well. However I was mereley mentioning those double pedal cats though I believe Jojo would clown them if he played double pedal.

JOjo does drum-n-bass and Thomas does drum-n-bass as well so the would rip it up.

I would go out on a limb and say that the top 5 inspirational/creative/mind blowers today would be :

Thomas Lang (total package = techical mastery, musicianship and groove... he is not a chop monster he is dedicated)
Virgil Donati (twisted monk of drums)
Jojo Mayer (totally under-rated by most, needs to be in the limelight more)
Horacio "El Negro" Hernadez
? ....leaning toward Marco Minnemann  (but then it looks somewhat like I am only a tech junky - however when you see Extreme Drumming, particulrly his playing with the trio: piano, electric bass and drums -- all pieces which he wrote.... you go hmmmmm Whoa!)

Antionio Sanchez hasn't showed that he could really groove yet and not let technique over shadow the music... everything just comes at you mind-blowing)

He got off the plane in Memphis and setup asked what time the clinic started (it was like 12:30-1 pm at the time).. the clinic started at 7pm . He freaked and said, I gotta practice and proceeded to got full out for 6 hours. We're downstairs waiting for the doors to open and he has the ceiling doing the trampoline. He chages and goes another 2 hours.

I heard from a pro that that 's all he does. Like no real life, just drums.

JoJo
Vinnie
Weckl

Most musical monster drummers out there.Order may vary according to my mood.I've been into Vinnie for 5 years 24/7 and i don't really listen to Dave anymore but used to alot.

Thomas
Virgil
Marco.

Virg.is my favourite out of those three. He's the most musical.Marco and Thomas are beasts as well but they sound too robotic, too perfect ,too stone cold to me.I don't feel like bobbing my head when listening to them. That's why i don't even bother.LOl

Jojo and Vinnie remain my favourites however. They make drumming look so easy it's not even funny. So musical with chops for days but they play, first and foremost, for the sake of music, not the instrument.Feel me?

Akira is very musical, I have to agree with that statement, as well as seeing him go to another level. JoJo is mos def a kat that's under rated. On the real, there are so many kats who are doing it big, I wouldn't say they get over looked, I think a lot of times when someone says drums, the first thing folks may blurt out is Dennis, Dave or some others... but dudes like Chris Dave, JoJo, El Negro, Robby Ameen, Gene Lake, Thomas Lang, these kats are putting it down. Truthfully I like Dennis Chambers a lot, but I'm finding myself searchin out other drummers.

I'm starting to realize that what I like most about Chris Dave is his feel & approach. I sat down at the drumset, and started playing some of the stuff I heard him play - and none of it was technically difficult, as far as I'm concerned. However, it's just that ... his approach drives me absolutely nuts!

So, I guess I wouldn't put him in that category, because he doesn't posess Langs, Mayers or Donati's technical prowess.

I agree with you on the feel thing. I wonder about the technical prowess because that 4 Way Cordination book is no joke and if he was working and flipping that in high school he should be able to do tha' do like them. However, I think it is a certain mindset that cause you to go to the new frontier like those fore mention monsters. Chris will always pay his bills though,  :D because he is on it!

Now Gene Lake is one we haven't thrown into the fray and he is sick as well. Admittedly I don'yt know much about him but the stuff he did with Mesheel and the Screaming Headless Torsos is out there especially following Jojo Mayer in both bands.

Well, Sabe ...

The thing with Chris is - I've heard a lot of Chris ... and often times, his approach is very different. To date, I'm not exactly sure what he's totally capable of. I'll hear two clips of Chris in a row and I'll be like ..."Oh, okay ....well, this is pretty much the extent of his abilities." Then, someone else will send me something else - and I'll be like...."OOOOOOOOh....well, umm....." A lot of the clips I've sent you ... it sounds like he was in his experimental mood. He seems to be a very unusual guy, and that comes through in his playing. I never know what I'm gon' get.

At this point, I can honestly say I don't know where to rank him. Just when I think I've figured him out - he's goes off into something else that I've never heard from him before. Then their is the 4 way coordination ...

Then, their are all the stories about him being able to play everything he play's, backward. THEN, their is the story from Gerald Heyward .. about being at this drum warehouse(It's a very popular name, but it's 6 in the morning, lol) with  Chris & Dennis ... and they were trading licks ... and Chris had both of them like  :o :o :o :o :o Aaron Spears, in his MD article said, 'If you sit down and listen to what he play's, it's so crazy, it's scary." This is from the mouth of a, as you well know by now, well-respected drummer. At least in the gospel & RnB world. He must've been a witness to something really stupid.

So, when you put all of that together ... I think I'll just put a "Opinion Subject To Change" next to his name.

However... I am ready for him to go to another level. He has mastered what he does many times over. It is starting to get boring.

I need to hear a whole lot more of him to offer my opinion too. I do keep an open mind.

God Bless.

I need to hear a whole lot more of him to offer my opinion too. I do keep an open mind.

God Bless.

I have a lot more.  ;D

Blaquegenious mentioned Akira.

Akira is strictly about making music. He is the show. That was actually the first clinic I ever saw (I thought before it the second but actually I saw him before seeing Virgil). Everything I have seen awith Akira has been totally musical.

However... I am ready for him to go to another level. He has mastered what he does many times over. It is starting to get boring.

You know, it occurred to me just now, as I was watching clips of Donati..

Many guys can't appreciate his playing, 'cause what he does go RIGHT over their heads! Hate to say that ... but, once you start to REALLY understand music - you'll hear that guy play and go, "That ain't God. That aint' God at all...". He is that ridiculous on the set man.

Donati For Emperor!!

I'm not callin' Donati a beast, I'm saying he may be the BEST.

Their seem to be a lot of beast's, but no many guys can be mentioned in the category of "the best". Even if arguably...

"People have different taste's. The other day, a friend of mine told me he didn't like Chris Dave, 'cause his playing was too unusual. I didn't tell him he was crazy. Everything isn't for everybody."       - Maestro Divine

With some of the comments on opinions as to who is the best...or better than Dennis, is anyone hearing any drummers outside of the music they like??? I am not saying go buy Secular Music. Absolutely not. But there is a thing called Drummerworld.com. I can name 10 guys off of that site that blow away most of the drummers mentioned on here. We need to take a another look at what moves us!

Maybe Div & Sabe are right..... its over the heads of some.

God Bless.

Man, derico is a beast but he aint dennis and he sure aint better than him.

ya jive skippy!!!!!!!!!!!! I think when it comes down to like all that crazy double bass work thomas lang and v donati may have chambers but overall chambers is the better drummer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8) but then those cats gotta use double pedals chambers one foot against lang and donati on a single pedal would blow theres out of the water.!!!!!!!!!! peace 8)

NO slight to Dennis Chambers' abilities but the fact is these guys have better control and technical prowess than he does.

whatever you say sabe i still will go with dennis yeah u right with that double and triplet stuff i have heard them do that but still chambers is my man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8)

Look we could keep this thread going and it really would most be opinion because of the lack of objectivity, exposure to music, and music education and lack of vision.  When we cannot see why a peson would practice 4--6 hours a day on the drums we don't undersatnd what they acheive in the process or understand that the journey was more important than the destination/goal. We also thendon't understand how important proper objective critique/anaylisis/blatant truth is. Notice I didn't say opion.

Come on... everyone that has suffered through level 3 High School English/Math/Science or college Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, Physics etc remembers that if you cannot support nad prove your hypothesis ypour work and your opinion means nothing.

People whom have never been through a juried competition want understand the evaluation processes that should be a part of all our thinking and growth. There will always be someone qualified, tried and proven to be the best on a given day. Winner, victor, champion, master, king, god (little "g" not big "G" are all levels of trial and completion. Anyone, I mean anyyone who tells you that no one is better than another is out of touch with reality. They are of touch with kingdom principles. These positions are all mentioned in the bible yet we have gotten so churched that we act like we don't need to use them  or understand them. That would mean responsibility and accountability. that would mean experienceing loss, disappointment and sometimes failure just to get what we were destined to have. What that would mean we have to set goals, which requireresponsibilty and accountability.. naw, opinions are easier. "Alex I'll take opions...".

We grow through the proving grounds not opinion grounds. Opions should spark discussion/investigation not be a foundation.

For threads like this to grow each of us we need to stay away from so much emotional opinion and dig/fish in the deep/renew our minds and admit our thruths to ourselves that influence our opions which we base our choses on,  be them right or wrong. For most of us, WE need to set our goals higher and practice some self-discipline and raise our level of understanding by seeeking knowledge/increasing knowledge. We need to strive to understand what we are doing and what we should be doing as related to mechanical/technical skillset. That will inable us to better understand other drummers and their advanced techniques and thinking processes better.

It's time to grow folks and get off the wow-eee factor. We are passing on too much unfounded person opinon information rather than real food. Let step it up folks.

What about Vinnie in comparison to these dudes, Sabe?

So, are you going to go out on a limb and see Thomas and Virgil are the two Kings of the drum world, Sabe?!?!  ;D I'd agree.

Wait! What about Jo Jo, Sabe?

Guys, I just watched Virgil Donati's clips on Drummerworld. . . I actually yawned!! It bored me. It was nothing INNOVATIVE. I watched a kid on the Modern Drummer DVD from 2004 do some of that stuff. And if you really study them, a lot of things that they do (especially T. Lang) came from Dennis. Yeah, they took some of it up a notch, but EVERYBODY with 2 pedals is doing that stuff now. BORING!!!! Give me a church drummer ANYDAY.

This weekend I got the chance to see Aaron Spears, Spanky, Booty, Erik Tribett and some others shed. . .I really wasn't into Aaron Spears, but the boy is creative. . .with ONE pedal (no cheating). I know some of you are going to charge me up after this, but that's okay. I'm still half dreaming from my Donati-induced coma. . . so what you say won't change my opinion. And I'm not trying to change yours. . .anskleoadfskfjkjgdksssssssssssssssssss sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

Whoops, I fell asleep again just thinking about Virgil. . .

Guys, I just watched Virgil Donati's clips on Drummerworld. . . . It was nothing INNOVATIVE.

Wow... Talk about closed minded. To say you don't like Virgil's playing is your right and that is your opinion. To say it's not innovative is a falsehood/not a fact. To go so far as to say that Virgil and Thomas got some stuff from Dennis is a possibility because they are both knowledgable and well versed. To insinuate that you can see Dennis in either Virgil or Thomas playing is unfounded to say the least. However to down play what they have accomplished is short-sighted. The fact is that Dennis , Virgil and Thomas mastered rudiments which give them a firm foundation to communicate through the drum set.

To say that you saw the 14 year old kid on the MD Fest 2005 DVD doing the same thing was again short-sighted. Just because he was doing 4 way independence and double-pedal does not mean his was doing the same thing. The beauty is always in the details.

I am not going to toss it back and forth with you or try to change you opinion. However, I will advise you to expand your vision and renew your mind. It seems like you have allowed opinion to take over objectivity.

Have ya'll ever heard of a drummer named Carter Beauford from the dave mattewes band. He's real creative what he does on the set and does a lot of thing comparable to Dennis. But he's limited to some exposer(sp) because he has only played with DMB and Victor Wooten. Ya'll need to check him out
