I've had it with these community choirs recording cd's and not paying the musicians afterwards. I mean there is always some excuse why the money isnt there. I think every city should have some kind of musician union where the choirs have to pay up front. If anyone is experiencing this, please comment and share your ideas on how to stop this ungodly behavior!
-
the way to solve this is to have the agreement up front and have a contract drawn. otherwise you will always get the shaft but all you can do is continue to walk in the love of GOD because they will have to deal with what they did come judgement.
-
Man there is a musicians union!!! You ****** need to learn how to run music (drumming for most) like a business! Learn how to do a legal and binding contract, Get paid before the show, Have a rider, keep all receipts from equipment, sticks, food, hotels!!!

The problem with getting paid before the show is that no one gets paid before they do a job. Not even on a 9 to 5. And those contracts get broken all the time. You cant take them to court because the amount usually isnt worth it. So what comes first, ministry or gettin paid? Help me out man cause I dont know what to do.

Most big artist are paid half or in full before a show! I know of artist John P Kee, Clark Sisters and so on who showed up and didnt go on because the promoter had not paid them!

As a graphic/web designer I get at least 50% up front.... and the client doesn't get the product until I am paid in full.
In music real working national folk get paid in full before they touch the stage. 50% comes within a couple weeks of the booking if not before the booking locked in.
Modern_Drummer and Cajonezzz spoke about getting your own contracts done in another thread.
Respect comes first. If you have made a committment to do work it should be honored for he agreed upon amount. The Lord honors a man that honors his word... Lying, cheating, stealing and pimping in the name of the Lord or the ministry is wrong. It is up to you to investigate and handle your business as such. You are/should be a skilled craftsment not an apprentice. So you need to be clear on whether it's a hobby or a profession.

Pimping? Who been pimpin in the name of the Lord? :o :-*

THIS IS A SAD TOPIC, I GUESS GOD IS JUST TESTING YOUR FAITHFULNESS TO STAY WITH YOUR GIFT, BUT MAN, I'VE SEEN PREACHERS GIVE MUSICIANS BAD CHECKS & I MEAN MORE THAN JUST ONE!!!!!!!!!
-
This is indeed a sad topic. MUSCICIANS SHOULD NEVER DEMAND TO GET PAID. IT"S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY!!!! >:(
IT"S ABOUT THE GLORY OF GOD. IF YOU NEVER GET PAID A DIME YOU SHOULD STILL BE HAPPY THAT GOD GAVE YOU THIS ANOINTING AND TALENT.
I am a skilled organist/pianist. Been playing for 10 dedicated years. Never BEEN PAID A DIME. GOD WILL BLESS YOU FOR IT MAN. ;D
JUST PLAY TO THE GLORY OF GOD. :)
-
Some of u guys said it best. God gave u a talent. It's us who have 2 remember not 2 get greedy with that talent. What Gos gives he can easily take away. God will make a way even for those who will and do it for a livin. Trust in God.

I hate to say it, but the church got some of these dudes brainwashed. They convinced you to not ask for money, while they're riding around in expensive Euro cars!
Man, whatever.

They need to learn to spell. What's "decipline"?
I'm just joking, man.
Ummm ... they need discipline & work ethic. Being able to zoom in on a problem, and sticking with it until you get it right. Not start doing more "exciting" things, when you should practicing the things that you deem less exciting, but very important.

(Over the PA System)
"We need a Spellcheck on Decipline. Spellcheck on Decipline.....
Thank You."
:D :D

So what does discipline mean....If you play right, then you aint gotta ask for money because the money will come to you????

If pay is involved then he should pay you at least $150 -200 for the two nights that is like $75-100 a night. He is passing the collection plate both nights I know. You are being called in to play a last minute gig. That is just respect. and just.
No offense to anyone but this topic is about things that happen to working musicians and aspiring "working" musicians. God will no doubt bless His servants but it is the churches responsibility to pay the church musicians (permanent, regular). The music department and especially guest musicians. The church pays the plumber. They pay the electrician. They pay the pastors car notes. But they cannot pay the music ministry... The devil is a liar. No labor goes on reward. The church is supposed to take care of those in the ministry. Stop making excuses for some folks/churches/ministries being out of order.
Before anyone starts in.. I have travel 14 hrs and played for free for a ministry/pastor before but my lodging and my food was taking care of. I play every week currently not for a salary... I get a love offering. I didn't ask I was automatically given that respect. This ministry which does not have a permanent music dept does that for any musician that sits in. That is respect. That is decent and in order. When ever I go to a church ministry and see they need help I will offer to sit in need be with no expectancy of pay but an expancy or reward. And still I say that a working musician of ministry should be paid. Your pay should reflect your experience/capabilities just as it does in the world. Just like on any job but especially working a minstrell you better be prepared and on point in tune giving your best. Don't be like Cain.

I would agree with you on the amount to a point. And that point is....."how big is this church?". That's just something that can't be overlooked, you know? If the church has like 8 people (example), it might be unrealistic for them to put out $150. Even if a musician is worth that, the church's budget has to be considered. On the other hand, if the guy is paying you out of his pocket, then he should be able to come up with some sort of compensation for your time. The paid musician thing is a case-by-case type of thing, ya know? Good word though Sabe!

I don't care brother. If they offer you money then you should take it but you should never demand money man. God called musicians to play to his glory not for money. Honestly if you weren't going to get paid would you still play?
-

Let me tell you something brother. WHO CARES WHAT THEY ARE RIDING IN. If they offer you money take it but please don't demand it. JUST PLAY TO HIS GLORY. GOD WILL BLESS YOU FOR IT MAN. DON"T WORRY ABOUT THE MONEY. GOD WILL BLESS YOU JUST FOR STAYING HUMBLE.YOUR SKILL WILL INCREASE TEN FOLD I'm TELLING YOU.
Most of the best musicians that I've ever heard are the ones that don't get paid. THERE ARE GREAT MUSICIANS IN MY AREA WHO DON"T ASK FOR A DIME. MUSICIANS ARE HERE TO HELP USHER IN THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD. YOU CONTROL MANY IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF A SERVICE WHEN YOU MINISTER THROUGH MUSIC. YOUR MOTIVES HAVE TO BE RIGHT. YOU LITERALLY HOLD SOULS IN THE PALMS OF YOUR HANDS. YOU CAN HELP DRIVE A PERSON TO BE SAVED THROUGH YOUR PLAYING. SEE IT"S MORE THAN THE PAYROLE.
BE BLESSED :)
-
CHURCHES AND MINSTRIES WILL GAIN RESPECT FOR YOU IF YOU REMAIN HUMBLE AND WILLING.
AFTER A WHILE THEY WILL START OFFERING YOU MONEY BECAUSE THEY KNOW YOU ARE FOR REAL AND NOT JUST IN IT FOR THE MONEY. :)
Well that's about all I have to say :)
IF I HAVE OFFENDED ANYONE I'm SORRY :'(
DIDN"T MEAN TO STORM IN ON YOUR CONVERSATION
I just had to get this off of my chest though ;D

DID GOD CALL FOR A PASTOR RIDE IN A 2006 CADDY with Spinners and video and bang. One of the reasons I quit playin at my original church about 8 yrs ago was because the amount of money I spent for travelin to church 6 times a week, the extra maintenance for an aging car due to numerous traveling for extracuricular chuch activities and my expenses and wear for my drums/hardware because the church was too cheap to invest in quality equipt. I asked the pastor to put me on salary because I was also a college student. My focus wasn't on money but I had to take off of work for church activities the least he could do was the proper thing. He gave me a pathetic answer on why it"s wrong for me to ask that. Then i proceeded without disrespecting the man to ask him is right that he lives in excess and has a 4 bedroom brickhouse with 3 vehicles paid for by the church. He couldn't answer me so I left. If i offended anyone, I can truly say I don't care because I'm not about being pimped or frauded out for anyone. HOWEVER I WILL PLAy for FREE for a ministry that is in order and on the side of right to truly give glory to GOD.
-
MAN I FEEL FOR YOU. MY PASTOR(My Father) IS NOT LIKE THAT. HE USES THE CHURCH's MONEY TO GET US THE BEST EQUIPMENT. WE GOT NEW PEWS LAST MONTH AND NEW CARPET LAID. I HAVE A NEW B3 with 2 leslies. Our drummer(my brother) has a drumset with shure mics hooked up to it. He's talking about repaving the parking lot. There are some crooked preachers out there but I just happen to be under a very straight one. That's probaly the reason why I feel the way I do. Sorry for not seeing it from your point of view man. I have to agree with you on this that many preachers use the money for the wrong reason.
-
My father kills the common stereotype that if you drive a nice car then your ripping off the church. God DID MEAN FOR HIS PEOPLE TO HAVE 2006 cars and riches, BUT (As you said) IT HAS TO BE DONE THE RIGHT WAY. MY FATHER WORKED HARD ON 3 JOBS FOR NICE CARS. HE DOESN"T RIP OFF THE CHURCH. Not every preacher is crooked but unfortunately alot of them are. I've have been to some churches that won't even keep their bathrooms clean and I know they have the money. I mean the crooked curtains and everything. I think ( YOU COULDN"T EVEN STRAIGHTEN OUT THE CURTAINS?) I ask myself aren't You are suppose to put God's House over your own house. God's house should be nice and kept up not looking like junk. I agree with you man. The church has to learn to put God first and their richly possessions last.

Let me tell you somethin. God gave the church 5 gifts. Ephesians 4 verse 11 (Apostles, Prophets, Evangilist, Pastors and Teachers) My friend, Musicians are not gifts. They are luxery services! We must get paid! Stop all the brainwashing about not demanding money cause if they dont pay you, they are going to eventually pay someone else!
-
Be blessed brother :)

I"M BACK ;D
Who cares if they pay someone else as long as I did it to the glory of God I really wouldn't care.
You really sound quite crazy with your (WE MUST GET PAID) quote ;D . I'm not trying to brainwash anyone. I'm just speaking the truth. Don't get me wrong. I'm not talking about playing for someone who you know is just as crooked as a question mark. I'm talking about playing under good caring spiritual leaders. How you feel if God sayed I am not waking you up this morning unless you pay me?
Give your gifts back to God. First of all the gifts and talent that you have are not yours. They are God's and he just gave them to you. Use His gift the best and most humble way you can. God's Gift is special and you can't put a price tag on that. :)

First of all, I wouldnt say nothin cause how could I hear God if I was sleep? ;) Secondly, its musicians like you who will forever hold the rest of us back. You are probably the one who goes, "Why pay him, I'll play for free!" Musicians need to stop undercuting and stabbing each other in the backs for gigs and stick together. Unionize!
-
NO MAN I DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT STABBING ANYONE IN THE BACK. IF I KNOW ANOTHER MUSICIAN IS SET TO PLAY I WOULD NEVER TRY TO UNDERCUT HIM. I've HAD THAT HAPPEN TO ME BEFORE AND I PLAY FOR FREE(Unless you offer money).IT"S NOT A GOOD FEELING. THIS IS DRIVING AWAY FROM THE SUBJECT
-
If and only if I played secular music, but other than that whenever God chooses to bless me!!! Im not big on money or getting paid. I do what I do because I love to do it, whether there is money or not, and Im not going to let money hold me back. Now If I was doing full-time to where I couldn't work or something of course I have to take care of me and my family, but if me and my wife have a job thats doing us great why put the pressure on someone else, anyways when it's time god will let me know.............He will come to me!!!!!
-
Let's get back on subject or else.
Someone working in the kingdon as a musician has been getting stiffed by ministers/ministries/church folk and it is not right.
If being a working musician is not your thing please don't jump into this thread. We have had way to much emotional, doctrinal banter....

Thats just plain wrong. That Pastor... sometimes you must ask yourself "Are these so called pasters called to be in ministry, or did they nominate themselves?" What makes this situation sad is that, your old pastor is not the only one pulling this sort of stuff. I have seen and found personally that a church will "use" you of your time, efforts, and money, to make them look good! Bru, you did the right thing by leaving that church. You will be blessed by God in His way in His time. Just be patient. Also about that pastor, he thinks he is in God's glory. I believe he is getting his rewards right here on earth.

Man I understand where you are coming from, but some people need to learn how to take the heat. I dosent seem like to me this thread was only directed to working musicians. I mean some people don't want to hear the truth. Every drummer is not meant to be in ministry. Just because you can keep a beat and do a whole bunch a tight stuff and hold a tight pocket dosen't mean that your are suppose to be drummer bringing in some flow. Im not here to start anything bruh, but the only thing that is going to help anyone is the truth. I understand what he was talking about and I was under a Pastor like that a little while ago, but you have to move on, and just because you had a bad experience you shouldn't move to the next expecting. He asked a simple question "Are we tired of getting paid?" I said no and I explained why and so did others. If someone is that emotional to where they cant stand to hear others opinions without going crazy they need prayer. It's like everyone always wants to hear something positive or something praising them. Anywyas my opinion is my opinion and just because this is a christian website and im achristian im going to look at everything in a christian manner. Don't forget blessings don't always come as money!!!!! Me and my wife are the first owners of a brand new 4 bedroom 3 bathroom house and we are not paying a dime for it (Blessed?? :o) but Im not getting paid by any of the 3 churches. So still look at the rewards God is giving you. We he was going around preaching through the streets, people offered him gifts, but alot of them were not monetory. People offered him gifts by giving him a place to stay for the night, food, and some of everything else. Man just don't take everyhting everyone says to heart, don't forget all you can do is explain your situation. Everyone is not going to know exactly how you feel inside. Even if you don't like my reply it's no hard feelings. God speaks in many different ways and my reply might help someone else, just don't take it to heart alrigh't yaaaaaaalllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!! ;) :) ;) :) ;) :) ;) :)

What doctrine? this is plain common sense. Musicians shouldn't be saying ( I'm not going to play unless you pay me). It's wrong and this is my last post on this sad topic :)

Man I think you are totally right!!!!!! If god was standing on a altar preaching to us we wouldn't beg him for money!!! or would we?? ??? ??? His blessings are not all monetory!!
-
LET ME JUST SAY THIS, I GET PAID AT MY CHURCH, BUT I DIDN'T ASK THEM FOR IT, THEY SAW MY FAITHFULNESS TO THE MINISTRY 1O YEARS AGO, BUT ALSO DIFFERENT MINISTERS WHO LEFT OUR CHURCH & STARTED THERE OWN CHURCH ( OF COURSE WITH OUR PASTORS BLESSING) HAVE ASK ME TO PLAY FOR THEM & I DID, WHEN IT WAS OVER THEY TRIED TO HAND ME SOME MONEY & I REFUSED, YOU KNOW WHY, LIKE I TOLD THEM ALL THE YEARS THAT YOU SOWED INTO OUR MINISTRY & DIDN'T HAVE YOUR HAND OUT, NOW IT'S MY TURN TO SOW INTO YOUR MINISTRY, JUST TO HELP OUT, THE REASON I SAY THIS IS, MOST DRUMMERS I ASK TO FILL IN FOR ME, THIER FIRST WORDS ARE HOW MUCH WILL THEY PAY ME, YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN IT'S YOUR TURN TO SOW A SEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
THis does not include all Pastors :::this is a true question ask yourself this to end this arguement. How many Preachers refused the love gift that they recieved from the offering during a revival..??? I can say I have not seen one to this day.My thinking is this that I learned in the military: "Don't ask someone to do something that u are not willing to do yourself? How many times have you had the Pastor give just the organist a love offering during that same revival while u are just siiting there.( Basically looking stupid)! Believe me some churches have the deacons and the pastor dippin thier hands in the BUILDIN FUND. Nowadays I treat playing in churches as a buisness for my labor (Only one church will I play for free) that way they know that U are serious. and I make people I don't know sign a contract for liability when they touch my gear. It's only fair. U won't leave church all heated up . It's just my opinion if u don't like it find a better solution..
-
Actually my father did it one time. He was the visiting speaker and they took up a speaker's offering. God move in a mighty way. My father gave them the money back.
-
cool. Your dad sounds like he"s one of the few to do whats right
-
I REALIZE THAT THIS TOPIC ISN"T GETTING ANYWHERE. MAN WE ARE BACK AT GROUND ZERO YA'LL :D
I now realize that some things are better off left alone so
BE BLESSED :)
MUCH LOVE FOR THE LGM FAMILY ;D
-
Yeah my dad is a pretty straight forward guy
HEY IT"S IN THE GENES ;D

-
Hey JHr I agree with you that good clean pastors are very very hard to find.
We'll that's about it
FOR THE 9th TIME
Be blessed everyone
THIS IS A CONTAGIOUS THREAD(MAN I've said bye about 4 times haven't I?)
It's just so interesting. We'll anyway for sure this is indeed my very last post as I need to just let it rest

Okay fellas, somebody answer me this, what happens when you come into a situation where the md is offering to pay you a certain amount per service and then when it's time to get paid, you are only getting half of your money? Plus, you go to play everytime the doors open and you give it all you got everytime out the gate and you are still getting the shaft. What do you do then? I know the easy thing to do is pack up the cymbals and sticks and bounce, but what about the fact that you are playing with a tight band and all of you are cool?
-
U can do this a number of ways A) JACK him up on in the back of the church, GO MADEA on him and beat the hell outta him and demand that he gets right. B) Play and then leave in the middle of the song without saying a word, C) Go on strike and sit in the audience D) or one of my favorites pray and talk to the pastor because to me that seems like the MD doesn't respect u and he thinks that u need him more than he needs u so he"s going to do what he wants, beside I guarantee u that he's getting his full pay/ besides shouldn't u get paid directly (SP) by the church financial office and they give u a reciept that both parties sign. Cause he can easily pocket your other half. What I am truely saying is watch your back and don't go into a depression for this stuff.

Good word

Music-samurai I tired of not getting paid what should I do?
Get paid upfront! Get money! Get money! Get money! Its all about the...naw Im just playin. But for real, get your money up front.
-
I would suggest a few things
1. When they call you, or ask you to come and play.
A) Ask all the questions you think you should ask. Like,
1. How many rehersals are there?
2. Do I have to bring my gear?
3. How long is the gig / service?
4. How much is it paying?
5. How many songs?
All these questions determine what you should charge.
And the second you hear these words spoken, "Awwwww man don't worry about it I'll take care of you, you'll get paid!" RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN AS FAR AS YOU CAN SEE!!!!!! :-\ or just simply say :oNO!!!! See people will only do what you let them do! I say NO! To stuff all the time and most of the reasons I say NO! Is not because the money is wrong, but because the person is wrong! Anytime someone ur doing buisness with is not upfront with you, for example,
1. If they don't look you in the eyes and talk to you, DON'T BELIEVE A WORD THEY SAY!
2. Anyone that never gets to the point of the buisness or expectations of the job, DON'T BELIEVE A WORD THEY SAY!
3. Ecspecially ya "Boys" make dem dudes keep it real with you about everything concerning the buisness!
4. And people that can't ever make up their minds about what they want "Watch them 2!"
But also remember some things you should do strictly based on relationships. I've said many of times on this forum, that relationships mean everything is this buisness, so be wise about how you do ur buisness and careful about the relationships you subject urself too. My Mom once told me, "Never get involved with someone that has less to loose than you do!" ;) and never forget this, Its ok to say, "No I'm good but Thanx for asking!" Fellas All opportunities aren't good opportunities and all good opportunities aren't GOD! opportunities! I Love you guys, and I'm praying for you! And you should be tired!
