learning to play ?

Is it better to watch some one play or hear at on a tape
my drummer  was told that its is better just to here a tape and play the beat

when i told him the he needs to get some videos
so he can see how to get the differant sounds on the drums   how to hold the stick  where to hit the cymbles and snare .

thay said that would make him play like other people if he watched  a
 video  is that true help me so i can help him  

he does good with keeping a beat
he just plays the same beat for every song
and hes 15 years old and been playing scene he  was 9  

no one has never took time to help him

but know i am the m.o.m and i want him to get better so all input is needed

The answer: yes.

At his age, I would recommend he just get as much good exposure as he can. There comes a point where you just have to listen to music, watch other people and play.

Also, is there any way he can take some lessons? I took a few drum lessons myself and I was surprised how much actually goes into playing the drums . . . it is so much more than a good beat; it is good technique and knowing what you are doing.

I think you need both seeing and hearing. I'm a visual learner so seeing someone play it is alot easier for me. I play by ear. I can read a little music but I'd rather play by ear. You said he's been playing since he was 9 and he's 15 now...Is he any good? If he's been playing 6 years you would think he's pretty good. Does he really love it and is he dedicated? It doesn't matter if he uses a DVD to learn different things. He will not play just like the drummer he watches. Eventually he will get his own style and technique. In the beginning he might play a little like them...
