BASS PLAYER DRAWBAR REGISTRATION?????
« on: March 19, 2004, 10:30:56 AM »
Until I learn to play the pedals I still need to play the bass on the organ. My question is, what is the best drawbar setting for a deep bass sound? I heard some one do this before, but when I tried it doesnt sound deep enough. Do I have to select a certain preset?

Usually when someone is thumping bass, as some jazz players call it, they'll use an 888 or 8888 registration....That is with the first three or four drawbars pulled out.

Is that on the top or bottom keys? Or does it really matter?

Most Gospel Organ players use that on the top register.  But most jazz players use that on the bottom register.  Whichever you prefer to play it on you can use.

Jazz players play it that way because the percussion only works on the top, so they play the bass on the bottom. I usually play it the non-jazz way.

Jazz players also do a thing called "comping".  They will "tap" a pedal (usually A) to add a thump to the front of a bass note played on the lower manual.

I know this sounds very strange, but if you watch very carefully you can see this!  (Jimmy Smith won't admit  doing it, but you can see him do it.)

Speaking of jazz organists, I'm sure some of you know Joey DeFrancesco.  Well if you have heard any of his stuff, you can hear that his bass lines are so rich and deep, too deep to be played on a register, yet too fast to be on the pedals.  Well a friend of mine told me that he's actually playing the bass lines on the pedals with two feet.  I can't believe that.........if you've heard his stuff its like "How can he play the pedals with both feet and play all the stuff up top with his hands"?  Its like he's some sort of machine

Well he'll be in Chicago next week and a whole bunch of us will be going to check him.  I have got to see this for myself.  I'll give you all my reviews when I go :)

P.S. For those of you in Chicago, he'll be at the Jazz Showcase April 6-11.

Years ago, I messed around playing a bit with both feet, but I didn't stick with it. It takes a lot of coordination.
