Umm... is that even for real?  The Frankenstein was a Kramer mostly, wasn't it?  And that magazine looks heavily photoshopped.

Regardless, I'm happy with my 5150, and Wolfgang  :) (which was not a planned pairing, it just happened that way).

If I could afford it, I would get the Music Man Axis (like the old EVH) anyhow.  Actually, for that price, I could get 15 of them...

Many, many moons ago (circa 1986) I had a friend who made his own Frankenstrat (the red one...there were three after all).
He collected numerous photos of EVH, saw him live and read every article he could find on the red Frankenstrat and then painstakenly recreated every single nuance of the guitar in appearance and in function.
It was something to behold for the piece of junk it was made to represent.
He might even still have it...I'll have to ask him.

Re: the new one...whatever. If someone has $25k to spend on it then they've got issues, imho. Idol worship would be one...

With regards to the magazine cover, it seems that all that hard livin' might be catching up with Ed.  They may have touched up the photo a bit to make him look a little better.  As far as the guitar goes, it is not a Kramer.  Rather it was an el-cheapo Boogie Bodies Strat body (they eventually went on to become Warmoth I think) and probably a Charvel neck.  Eddies red guitar used to be white with black strips and was later painted red.  When he started Endorsing Karmer guitars, he put a Kramer neck on it.  This guitar eventually gave birth the thier Baretta.  The current encarnation of Kramer (the name is now owned by Gibson) is largely considered but a shadow of its former self, but thier Baretta re-issue (called "The 1984) seems like a pretty soldid guitar.

I play a wolfgang and 5150.  The Idea VH had was just to have a cheap guitar he could beat up, but sound amazing. If you buy a FENDER SQUIER '51 for about $100 it's made of basswood, same as the wolfgang.  take the pickguard off, and you got the same thing as a franken strat.  I even sanded the laquer off the neck, and put Birchwood Casey's Gun Stock out up there.  Then do the fretwork and you got a $2000 guitar.  I scalloped the neck on a dapne blue Squier and it looks and plays like the $1300 Yngwie guitar.  The Brass nut was too bright, I like graphite.

Speaking of EVH, did you know that he's also an inventor?

I wouldn't have it. In the first days of Van Halen,he was playing a strat. He done a butchering job of them from what I've read. $25,000 is way too much to pay for a ugly guitar.

He's also responsible for this one:

That was my selling point on the Wolf.  Cause I wanted a Floyd, but I LOVE my drop D!  It's a sweet little tool.  I also like the drop tuner on the Ibanez with the tune-o-matics.  You can set the 2 different pitches at anything you want, so, like From E to D, or from D to B, or whatever.  It's pretty cool, and wildly addictive.

And after 8 years of play, it's like a baby's bottom, only made out of velvet... lol  To play a new one compared to mine is so night and day.

you can buy replacement necks from warmoth with the EVH progressive shape/radius. i've never gottenone, but i've considered replacing the necks on all my guitars with them, lol. the first time i wraped my hand around that neck i new i had to have it. guitar almost played itself. (lf course, i traded the wolfgang for a Jackson Phil Collen Sig. Model about a year later, but that was a desperation move, i hated to let it go)
