How do you make that Bass drum BOOM?

Yea, I know about the pillow.

But in terms of sheer volum, what head/tuning combo will give you a great BOOM out of your bass drum?

NOTE: PILLOWS AND PADDING DO NOT INCREASE BOOM THEY ONLY SHORTEN SUSTAIN BRINGING MORE ARTICULATION/PUNCH TO THE HIT. BOOM is volumetric meaning the more open the space the more room for the sound to grow... like slamming a door in an empty warehouse with a concrete floor.

Put on an EMAD batter (use big ring) with an EQ1 vented front or an EQ3 batter with EQ1 front nothing inside. 2 half turns past finger tight on the batter... 2.5 to 3 on the front (go down to 2 if necessary). use an internal mic like the Beta 92 (flat, lays in bottom) or Audix D6.
For the Remo junkies PowerSonic batter with DW front head same tuning.

Technique wise let the beater rebound instead of digging in to the head. More rebound = bigger sound.

I am trully in Love with my EMAD 2. I thought it didnt get better than the EMAD, but oh, it does!

Sabe, could you please describe the sonic differences in the 2 size of rings? I am curious to know. Thanks.

God Bless.

The small ring gives a slightly dampened yet OPEN sound... jazzy with some control. The big ring brings the funk... more thump... shorter length of sustain on the note.

Does the same apply to the EMAD Reso as well?

i know many in here don't like it BUT
i use a Superkick 2 on the batter and evans eq3 on the reso
it is really really boomy...... real big
some will say the tuning range is shoty on the SK2 but , in the typical music we play and in non jazz environments no one listens for bass drum tuning notation, they go away saying ho big or solid etc the bas drum sounded.
so for boom i have to have my SK2
i've played both emads i don't like the 1ply i do like the 2 ply but, the quality is poop, i know people who don't even play hard who have had the head rip out of the metal ring... >:( boooooo i just keep hearing stories about problems with it.... but i do like how it sounds.. but not better than the SK2

...man I don't listen to stories anymore which is what I advice everbody to do.  We can't go around stereotyping products because one was faulty. :-\  I've had my EMAD II since July and it's been through a lot of drummers that kick hard and it's still there with no signs damage.  Those guys must've bought the first batch. :-\

...I may test kick the New Remo PowerSonic....."may".

You dont neccesarilly have to have an EMAd head, but whatever head you choose, I've found that the best thing to do is to finger tighten the batter head with the pillow leaned up against it, and then tighten the resonate head, the "Boom" is serious, and I have a regular maple kit...

RJ did ask for a recommendation on head selection. Hence the reason for EMAD being mentioned so frequently. So, when you say whatever head you choose, what have you chosen? thats what RJ is asking. What heads have you used and how did you tune them to give you that great big boom we all want.

most of them wren't stories but stuff people close to me experienced or stuff i saw with my own eyes.... and i do like it... but those experiences just turned me off... i wanted to get one cuz i use all evans -xsept the SK of course... but just when i was going to, things like that kept poppin up.....but again the head sounds really good (EMAD 2 ply) and it's true that what i've seen definitely doesn't necessarily represent the definite quality of the product... i just wanted to give my experience

The point is, my friend, that whatever head he does decide to choose he could possibly tighten it like this to get the best result. I mean jeesh, try and bash me why dont you...

Powerstroke 3's are cool.. and sorry guys!...SKll's are too...lol. For a punchy boom sound I use the SKll and put a small pillow in the kick just to eliminate some of the resonance.

PS. Please don't get on my back about the SuperKick suggesstion... I think there pretty good for certain situations. ;D ;D

I wasn't bashing you. I was simply pointing out that he asked specifically about heads. which ones we had experiences with. Thast the reason most people mentioned EMAD, because thats what they have. I sincerely apologize if you feel I was in some way bashing you. That wasn't my intention.

God Bless.

This is what works for ME.....I've got the Dave Weckl bass drum muffling strip on against the front head and the EMAD with the large ring but no internal muffling against it....It kicks like crazy.....Most studio engineers never have to put the big muffling blanket over the bass drum to get a good, deep sound.  You really feel it with or without it being miked....(It's DW too) that's got a little to do with it.  Truthfully, I've had the same experience with my Session series kit....same concept, deep bass....Experiment for yourself to find out what works.

I have had my EMAD 1 on my Yamaha for over 2 years with DW Heavyweight springs maxed out on my pedal for near a year and have not ripped so these guys would have to be hitting hard and digging into the head. Most of them are probably use to playing with pillows inside the kick which gives extra resistance... they don't understand that they cannot hit and empty can the same way.

I know you know your stuff Freddy so this is not a "call out". Just pointing out an often overlooked truth that folk try an blame a product for when it is user error.
