Good point s.o.P.
After my 'clash' with the Yama Oaks I am looking into
a set of Gretsch drums ...sumptin' with character ;)...
the same goes for Ludwig drums. They nice! I play a '66 Ludwig Classic
and Yamaha 9000 Recording Customs.

Oh, my bad, the DW waterfall bubinga sells for $7500!!!lol...yea 28, gospel peeps need to stop sleeping on Gretsch too. Paul John and Vinnie gets great sounds from them...but $2500 for the Lugs to $7500 for the D-dubs..I don't about the rest of ya'll, but I like money, I could do some good with that $5000.00..

I'm not hating on Ludwig, because at this point I'll play on anything (Pearl, CB, pots and pans...lol) , I'm just saying.....

Let's be honest here, there's no way in the endless depths of the universe that you're going to get the same sound out of a Ludwig as you would a DW...That's just fact

But I definetly hear what you're saying, not everyone has DW $mula$, and for a quality kit going Ludwig ain't bad ataaalllll

Pots and pans lol!!!!! good one hotsticks..say, did any of ya'll play on the couch when you were kids too??? but back to the drums, I think if you got a great shell with no defects, new heads, and NO shell penatrating hardware going through it and MOST importantly knowing how to tune a tom/kick ,you can get a great tone from just about ANY drum company...

My main kit is ludwig.  Birch Custom Accents.  The bass drum sounds sweet, and I got 7 toms with it, and everybosy says that the shells are very good, and they sound awesome.

...I'll forward this message to Gear Specialist SabianKnight.  All I know is that they haven't done much in years.  There hardware is still the same.  Everyone has stepped up their game and they stayed in the 50's.

...Oh yeah....no one is hatin' on Ludwig.  Why would you even state that ?/? :-\

I call it 'the flavor-of-the month (or year, whichever fits the bill)' syndrome, kinda like the ddrum wave that's happening now-a-days.  Luddy still makes some good stuff; it's just that a lot of the younger drummers haven't paid much attention to them because of the (dare I say it) classic look of the kits.  I still say that some of the most recorded snares came from Ludwig, and who can forget about the student drum - the Acrolite (although I had a Slingerland student snare drum).  I used to love the sound that my boy got from it - it had a REMO Clear CS hear, and that thang had a nice throaty pop to it.

Regarding the hardware, I've noticed that quite a few Lugwig artists are not using their hardware, but is using DW hardware instead.  I also noticed this on the MD 2006 DVD as well.

...tell you what....throw some Coated Ambs. over clear Ambs. on that joka and you'll resurect a ghost sound of the past.  A bunch of Rock drummers that I used to talk to were always looking for the late 60's Ludwig and Gretsh kits.

...yeah well I've been told that that's the reason why they're not in the Top Drum Companies List.  I've been told that their hardware stayed in the 50's while their shells are up to date. :-\

Again like everything in the drum world Ludwig is not the treat of the week! I remember when Ludwig was bigger and way more expensive then Yamaha and Tama AND on the same level as Pearl! At one point everyone had a Ludwig kit. (mid 80's to about 1990) I guess Ludwig gear became to big, bulky, slow and expensive! The fastest kick pdl I used by Ludwig was the speed king! I was playing Gerald stuff on it till the metal strap broke and was unfixable.
Mapex Drums, Grant Custom Basses, Carparelli Basses, Istanbul Cymbals,!

In response to the original post, Here's the skinny....Even though Ludwig shells are made in the US, the important parts like lugs, inserts, tension rods, bass drum spurs, and strainers are cheaply made in China. The shells are sent to China to be assembled as well. They cut costs on that stuff by out-sourcing to China, but those parts are important. I'm sure that most musicians don't want these parts breaking and then be hard to find as well. And the type of parts you have on the shells do affect the sound. So in purchasing a quality kit, more has to be evaluated other than the "sound". Am I buying drums with proprietary idea and products such as Yamaha's YESS, Pearl Optimounts, etc.? Is this an "A" grade maple or a lower grade maple shell? Is the finish cheap? These difference are why most of these other kits are more expensive and more sought after. But these differences are what make specific drums what they are. Hope this helps. Peace.
Love God. Live Long.
