ABSOLUTELY!! While Motown Records had some of the most beautiful bass playing in history, I believe the J5 received the most of them during their heyday!

Yes! that was another good one. I find that when I listen to the old 60's and 70's hits, there are more PHAT basslines than ever. There are more fancier licks, but when you listen to the tone, progression, movement, and tasteful placement of the 8th and 16th notes, man it doesn't get any better than that!

With the older stuff, you could isolate the bassline and know what the song is just by hearing the bassline.  Alot of times the bassline started off the song.

As it is often said, the bass is the foundation. I think about 99% of those old school songs were bass driven. You think about the Staple Singers, Temptations, and the list goes on....the bassline was the main lick of the song, the whole song! When take out the bass it just goes flat. It is amazing to listen to the songs because they did so much with the 4 string and alot of them did not use any special effects. I think (correct me if I am wrong) that when Larry Graham came on the seen he brought the thumping and plucking but also the fuzz/distortion and other effects.  The 4 string really makes you work the neck from top to bottom to get the most out of it.

yup, another good one. I was 7 years old in 1970 when J.J. breakout this song. I didn't know much about the bass, I just knew everytime I heard that low end groove I would grab the family broom, get in front of the mirror and go to town! You couldn't tell me nothing!  ;D ::)

I'm a youngster but I love the old stuff as well. I love the Motown stuff as well as the funk and soull of the 60's and 70's. But I'm an 80's baby and Luther's "Having A Party" Did it for me. I think M2 played bass on that track. I'm not sure.

Hey most definately. I think you will find as with the various ages that the best began in on era but continued to grow, develop and revolutionize the music industry. I used to love to listen to Stevie Wonder and he played the bass on the keys for a long time because he didn't have a bass player.

I am a Parliament, Funkadelic, Bootsy Rubber Band baby....Maurice White with EWF was another pioneer for me. Alot of people don't know but Bootsy played a year for James Brown, and you can't listen to JB without hearing the funky beats of the Bass in his music. The syncapation was out of this world! Larry Graham kicked it off with Sly and The Family Stone also...

The 80's gave you 777-9311 by the time..Now that was pure funk bass!! Of course we can't forget Cameo!

Now some of the smooth bass lines from the 80's came from Anita Baker, Sade, and the list goes on....

Good stuff!!  I think mine was "Fantasy" by EWF.  Just how that bass stuck out and grooved in it.  Hmmm this gives me a thread idea.

This is not an 80's song, but the bass solo in "The Walk" by The Time (right after Morris says, "Go on and walk, Terry.")  It was one of the first things I learned to play.

You are, of course, correct.  Thanks.  I can also play "Jerk Out" but there's nothing fancy about that.

It was this type of bass playing back in the 70's and 80's that got me hooked.
