Who the devil is the M.O.M ?
« on: September 15, 2007, 11:22:33 PM »
What happens if a lady (65 years old) who doesn't know music as well as you do is paid $100 per sunday and the 18 year old college music student is paid $30 per sunday. The younger musician is at the church Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday playing for services and rehearsing.  She is just there on Thursday and Sunday. The younger musician plays for every group in the church, while she plays for one. The  student is called to play for services and funerals and all se does is sit down. Who is the Minister of Music ?

That's the same situation I dealt with... I'm  a college student as well, It's like they want ME to be everywhere the choir and the pastor goes, they look at me kinda like the "music director", but the M.O.M. is a man in his late 40s... I was there playing by myself for years and then he joined the church... and it's not about the money, but, they wanted to take away from my income and give it to him

Don't get me wrong though-- our M.O.M. is one of the most humble guys I know and he gives that money that they take (and more!!!) back to me, puts me in charge of the music, and said that he is willing to step down if a problem were to arise....

He is not the problem... it is some of the people who esteem him higher than me....

Oh yeah, ask your pastor (or whoever appoints the M.O.M.) who is the M.O.M.

Why does everyone think that the M.O.M. has to be everywhere doing everything?

To me, a M.O.M. is one who can delegate responsibility. Perhaps, the MOM is a singer, as opposed to a musician; maybe there are OTHER duties involved with being MOM at your church. I don't know.

T-Block said it best; if your pastor appointed this person MOM, then that's their position, no matter how you FEEL about it.

Talk to your pastor and let that be that.  ;)

Rank has its privileges!
But for real, a piano player doesn't always equal M.O.M. Sounds like they're looking at you as just a piano player.
I'm pretty sure the old lady and the pastor has history.

Maybe they're looking at who may need the money the most.

Old people have bills.

If you're 18, you're probably still living at home with your parents, hence the reason you can be at church 6 days a week.

There are two ways you can look at this:

1. If you need more money, ask for it.
2. You're being built. Your compensation will likely increase over the next few years, especially if this becomes your sole income. I doubt hers will.

Col. 3:23-24 "And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ."

Just some advice that will save you a little heartache in the future:
Decide for yourself if you're playing for the glory of God or for business. There's nothing wrong with it being business; you just need to negotiate terms to your satisfaction.
But, if you're playing for the glory of God, it won't matter how much you or anybody makes because you'll be looking for your reward from God.
It's almost impossible to do both without money/ status becoming and issue.

I have given this issue to the Lord and I told Him put me where you need me and in the time you need me. I thank you all so kindly for what you have shared with me.

This should definitely be addressed and a Heads-up call made by the Pastor.  Most M.O.M. should be able to read music -- and Not necessarily always a piano/organ player.

I just don't find this statement to be true. Especially within the Black church. :-\

<< I just don't find this statement to be true. Especially within the Black church. >>

A minister of music is someone who SUPERVISES the music ministry.  Be it two choirs, an ensemble, praise team, or whatever entails your church.  You may believe it's not a true statement because MOST M.o.M do sit at a Keyboard (whether piano, organ, or clavinova) and PLAY!!!  One of the criterias in MOST churches is for that person in the M.o.M position is to have the ability to read music;  I do know about 5 people in that capacity that can't hit a lick at a Keyboard but can teach a song as if they did.... You would consider them as a Director;   :D

and if you look at the key word -- "SHOULD"  there is some truth in statement.....
"US" black church folks tend to put the "READ MUSIC" criteria on the backburner because we may lose many good players due to the reason --

reading music has its advantages... but the definition of Minister of Music varies between churches.... the actual name "Minister of Music" is a man-made title, and the holder of the title is therefore subject to man-made rules- which may or may not include the ability to read music
