Addicts Anonymous
« on: April 04, 2008, 11:16:53 AM »
Have we ever taken the time to find out why these particular groups strive…?

They strive because it is geared towards helping, healing and overcoming…

These programs have programs in place to help if someone should fall and they have a number for you to call should you get the urge to do it again… Should you fall off… you do have to start all over again… but guess what they don’t leave you to fight for yourself… They receive you with open arms and the same support you had from the beginning…

Why does this work? How does it work? Better yet, How can we get this kind of support from within the “Church”

Answer simple… Humble yourself…

We ALL can use a refresher course in Humbling ourselves…

IF you think about it, this COULD work in the church IF everyone would be on one accord and stop having their “own” agenda…

My uncle has been with AA for about 7, 8 years now… and we are so proud of him… He is doing something positive and he wouldn’t have been able to do it without the support of the family… as well as the family group within AA…

It is VERY hard for someone to talk about their problems… Especially if they themselves are embarrassed about it… So when a person opens up to confess/reveal/testify give them the support they need… Don’t shut them down because they messed up again… Help them get back up… Now I am not suggesting that you help until you are in a rut but help with kind words, kind gestures.. Or even a “How are you doing?”

You’d be surprised at how much of a difference it makes….

People in "Addicts Anonymous" are more than willing to share their experience, strength, and hope in order to help someone. Not so in the church, at least in my experience.

I don't know how I missed this, but you get a big ole COSIGN from me.

Good thread, JB.

And it's supported by one of my favorite scriptures: Galatians 6:1.

It really should be simple, since we're Christians... and restoration is Christ-like.  :)

Because many (NOT ALL) people in church look down on and punish people who have done wrong. And they cant publicaly admit when they do wrong, for fear of being looked down on. At AA everbody has something in common. Everybody in the room is going  thru the same exact thing you are, and that makes it a lot easier to open up.

You can find someone in the church who has had simular experiences, but it will be a lot harder

I couldn't agree with you more! The irony is, church should be the same. Sinners in need of, salvation, grace, mercy and forgiveness (common ground). He/She who is without sin, cast the first stone.
