When I read DW's first post, I started to chime in then decided not to. Now that I have read others' posts I'm ready: there is an Andy Griffith episode in which another little boy is influencing Opie's behavior in negative ways. Andy and Opie have a father-son talk which includes the following:
"Each ma or pa raises his boy or girl, as the case may be, as he thinks best."
I am careful neither to endorse nor condemn the choices of Earl Woods, Dick Williams, Joe Jackson, or Brandon Rose's father in raising Tiger, Venus and Serena, the Jackson clan, or Brandon Rose. And the snapshots of their lives we see in magazines, on TV, on YouTube, do not fully tell the story. I do, however, take from their choices a sense of perspective in what I as a parent might or might not do if faced with those situations. Like DW I have a son (he is 14) who plays instruments (drums and piano). He is more proficient at piano but enjoys the drums more. Now there may come a day when he decides to concentrate strictly on one instrument, but in the meantime as long as he enjoys both and is progressing in both we try to provide lessons in both. And secretly I would love for him to become a church musician because he would be able to earn money with his talent and the working hours are more conducive than most jobs a teenager or college student would have available to them working fast food or retail.
