more chords for tritones
« on: November 28, 2004, 07:03:40 AM »
this is just a little somthing to help fatten up your chords by using a tritone chord in your left hand. those of you who are experienced should already know this but maby it can help a beginer.

we all know there are six tritone chords and two chords to go with each. Well there are really four chords you can play with each :?:  follow me slowly now I'm not trying to confuse any one. review: we know the tritone is formed from the third and the dominant or flated seventh of the scale degree on the chord your playing for instance the tritone for Db is(F, B) which is also the tritone for G (B, F) they are interchangable.  the chords I am going to give you are not really tritones of the chord but chords you can use with the tritone chord.
the theory:
in the key of Db to find the tritone chord that will go with the major chord your playing go to the second and the augmented/sharped fith of that chord.  so the tritone chord would be (Eb, A) to find the second chord that will go with the (Eb, A) tritone chord go to the flated fith of the first chord which in Db wil be a G so the two chords for the (Eb, A) tritone that can be used as alternates are Db and G .  now the actual chords that go with that tritone are F and B. So you see one tritone chord can be used with not just two chords but four depending on the sound you are trying to get the alternate chords add more of a jazz feel to the chords.

If you already Know your tritones and the two chord that go with them the easy way to find the alternates is to play the second  or the agmented fitth of the chord you already know in the key of F the second is G the aug fith is Db those are your two alternate chords for the F tritone :D . see how they are interchangable it's just that easy

ok ok ok I know that was alot to take in but just read it a couple of times and it'll sink in mean while here are some practice chord progressions to get used to hearing what they sound like and a midi file at my site to hear where you can place them.

I use this in Db in I really love the Lord as passing chords

LH / RH

A E G / Gb A C Eb   (three beats)
Bb F Ab / F Ab Db    (three beats)
A Eb / F Ab Db          (one beat)
G Db / Gb B Eb          (one beat)
Ab D / Bb Db Gb   i     (one beat)
A Eb / Db F Ab     love   (three beats)
Ab Eb / Db F Ab   him     (two beats)
Gb Db F / Db Ab Db  i     (one beat)
A Eb / B Eb GB   love    (B tritone_) (three beats)
Ab D / Bb D F   him       (three beats)

for those of you who play organ there are even more possibilities for flavor by changing or adding the bass pedal.

I've uploaded a short midi file to my site so you can get an idea how this sounds click here  http://mysite.verizon.net/bpmusik/music/TRYTNES.MID

And for those of you that read here's the sheet music

I'll post more ways to use this method and where to put them soon untill then let me know if I can be of more assistance.

good post musmin!

quartal harmony in conjuction with traditional third voicing.  very nice.

i like to play a second inversion triad in my right hand and quartal voicings with my left hand on dominant 7th chords.

i use the right hand for upper structures of 9th 11th 13th extensions and alterations, and my left for quartal, which is tritone and perfect 4th combinations of lower structures.

sounds good.
