Keys = Automatic Respect?
« on: April 23, 2009, 11:01:25 PM »
I've noticed that keys players tend to get automatic respect when the walk into a room with their board.  Even before they begin to play the reference is there.  If they can play well, more respect.  If they can sing well, more respect.  If they can play and sing they're the next best thing to the Pastor!  (lol)

I'm not hating, I just think it's weird.  Maybe it's just me.  As pianists and keyboardist have you noticed this?

Most people are not musically inclined to when a band is playing the keys is the main thing that stands out and drums is next so that's why it seems like that

Yep this is correct. The keys player tends to dominate because he can do so much with his instrument, whereas the other instruments may be limited in what they can do.

However one thing i noticed is that if you play a lesser noticed instrument like a guitar or saxophone, you are EXPECTED to be very good. I get this all the time, especially when my choir gives me some hard guitar song and expects me to learn it.

Actually, I usually see the opposite.  if you are a cat and nobody knows you and you walk in you get NO respect......

LOL I was at concert.  The Keyboards were sweet too (Triton Studio, Fantom X-7, Motif ES Rack) and this cat walked in wit a lil casio (PLEASE refrain form the "its not the player its the board" quotes lol).  So some dudes were straight clownin my man.....then he gets up actin al stank goin up to the different musicians and stuff.  THEN he was transposing, meaning that nobody took him serious as a keyboardist.....

Right!  That's exactly how it is here.  Most musicians in my area will barely talked to me until after they heard me play and/or we had to play together and I guess they thought I was decent.

Musicians are a strange breed of animal. When you step on the scene as a musician, you had BETTER be good or you get very little respect.

This is why i am grateful i started my music career in a small church. I get to improve my chops and get better until it is time for me to play outside engagements.

I don't know about a respect thing, but I know if you walk into church with your board, you'd be end up playing some good music or they'll look at you like "what the..." lol. Its like there are no such thing as beginner pianists...the nicer the board, but better you play...allegedly lol.

Why? Why spend all that money on various boards at various stages of your musical growth?

Why not buy a decent board where you may not know how to use all the bells and whistles, yet, then grow from there.

Also, don't cats bring their own boards because it's the one with which they are most comfortable?  :-\

I somewhat disagree.  We're talking about keyboards which tend to become obsolete quicker than other instruments.  When I started playing and if I was able to afford the keyboard I wanted, it wouldn't be very useful now.   :D

Actually, I think you're agreeing. :-\

The latest keyboards become about as obsolete as the latest cellphone six months after date of purchase; that's my point.

Why spend trying to keep up when one could just buy a fairly decent one, practice, practice, practice until they're ready for the next latest, greatest keyboard (which'll become obsolete 6 months after date of purchase  ::) :D)?

Well you are looking at it from an engineer's perspective. Frankly all most churches need is a good old Motif and you are good to go. A lot of church musicians that i know don't even bother knowing more about their board other than how to layer and split and maybe change some settings like reverb and such. Other than that...meh!
