"Cheap,poor,broke churches"
« on: April 30, 2009, 07:14:32 AM »
Was talking to a fellow at a music store awhile back. When I mentioned this was for a church,he got sort of ugly.As i questioned him further, his issue was preachers always coming in wanting a "deal, free gear".Judging from my own experience and what others in music ministry haved shared here,do you think we represent ourselves to the world as broke? Like when it's time to upgrade/fix gear/bless somebody for faithful service/playing etc.-too many times it's "gotta pray about this".Usually code for "no way in hades we gonna help you".Like a poverty mentality/scheme-instead of being fair and paying a fair price;always wanting a "donation".if so,kinda sad.
Is your JESUS broke?

It is true of many ministries.  However, on the flip side many businesses see value in donating or discounting goods or services if your church is really out there helping the community.  Sadly, a lot of churches are just looking for a hand-out, and that makes all of us look bad.

That's interesting you brought this up because every time I deal with churches that need studio services, I find many churches are taken advantage of.  They wind up overpaying and not happy with what they paid for.  The customer should never leave unhappy BTJM.

prollem, is, in most churches, there is no one that is savvy enough to know in the realm of technology what is needed, what is not, what is essential, and what is fluff.

I see the salesman's frustration possibly coming from church folks looking for a hookup and trying to use God to get it.

Alot of churches get merchandise on credit and don't pay the bill. I attended a church once that wanted my mom and dad to get equipment on their credit. A lot of places don't allow churches to apply. They want legit address, phone numbers, ect... It's sad but so true!!!!

well, we do act like we are so broke all the time. We have 10 offerings per service. Now they are placing atm's in churches. as part of the music ministry the first thing everyone wants is great sound but when it cost comes into play more leaders look for the cheapest price tag and wants you to make it work.

I am for ATM/Debit Machines at church.  Church technology has to keep up with the times.  I don't carry cash and hate to write checks (esp if you're gonna hold'em forever).  Everywhere else I go, I can just swipe the card, I need the church to offer the same convenience, if possible.  It's a hassle otherwise, at least for me.

I'll take my salvation microwaves please, thank you.

Just joking Momma Ness, i totally understand what you mean. I HATE giving checks in church cuz they are not cashed on time and i may have spent the money. I have gotten in trouble so many times over NSF.

Hey think about it, the Church is not the only org. that might ask for a discount in a music store. I always ask for one myself, and get one on most occasions.  I'm trying to KEEP from being broke and poor. A business can always  pleasantly say,"we don't discount" without getting ugly.  Churches spend a lot of money on music and musical equipment.  Somebody will want their business.  If a person got ugly  with me because I asked for a discount, church or otherwise, I would think he didn't want my business and I would adhere to his wishes. As a church official, have I lost my right to get the best price that I can?

I told them you need to buy really mics 4 singing mics and 1 vocal (speaking) mic. they looked and said whats the difference??  ::) and they when told the price they looked and said can you get cheaper ones....  :-\ i said sure go to target or walmart they may have what your looking for...... hahahahah

We had a tech guy come to our church to evaluate the sound. Turns out our mics are crap and we need new ones. Nobody knew there was a difference between singing mics and speaking mics. Our sound is so much better now.
