to me a keyboard, piano, and organ are 3 different instruments and you cant approach them all the same way in technique. its actually rare to see some who can profiencently play all three.

Good to realize someone realize this.

I'll stick my neck out on this!
True they are all different. However, I would suggest that “pianist” and “keyboardist” are terms that are rapidly converging. For example the large authoritative instructional tome “The Contemporary Keyboardist” by Novello is for anyone who operates a key-like device. The cover of the book even overlays the graphic of a piano and a keyboard. The word “keyboardist” is used to include the pianist.

What skills are you suggesting are unique to operating an electronic keyboard? Are you are talking sound patch design … then yes, that is a significantly different skill to master. Don’t take this wrong … but operating the pitch wheel? Or, are you talking the ability to realistically play the drums on the keyboard? Or playing an acoustic guitar patch on a keyboard and actually sound like a strumming guitarist (different technique required)? These are amazing skills that some have mastered, but I can’t say I’ve seen these skills demonstrated at a gospel concert.

im referring to the fact that a pianist plays with three pedals not provided by a keyboard, i am talking about the point of fingering technique from a keyboard weighted or nonweighted to an actual piano board is way off although some come close and the same can be said for using a keyboard to play organ the sounds have gotten better but they still arent there. all in all the point is if you have a guitar, violin, and harp they cant be played the same way but the are all string instrument. have you ever heard of or seen richard smallwood play an organ i havent and i cant say that he wouldnt be good at it but he cant play it the same as he would play the piano. have seen or heard melvin crispell play anything but organ and again if he does he cant play the same way from the other

to me a keyboard, piano, and organ are 3 different instruments and you cant approach them all the same way in technique. its actually rare to see some who can profiencently play all three. i list three people in each section so you get an idea as what i am talking about.

keyboardist
1. jimane nelson (kim burrell)
2. john jackson (l. spenser smith)
3. doobie powell (himself)
4.  FLOYD THOMAS (J. MOSS & MARY MARY)

organist
1. melvin crispell (james hall)
2. mike taylor (ricky dillard)
3. derrick jackson (bishop g.e. patterson)
4. FLOYD THOMAS
pianist

1. richard smallwood (himself)
2. cyrus chestnut (himself)
3. daryl coley (himself)
4.  FLOYD THOMAS
there are some ivan powell, micheal bereal, kevin bond, and few others that can play 2 or more but its like for some have you ever listen to someone play organ and your like this cat is sick and then you hear him or her play piano and your like get back on organ?

Floyd Thomas (personal Friend) Can play and has mastered all three...look for his web-page on my space for more information.  It is my understanding he is now in the process of writing a few songs for Brandy and something for disney.  Watch Out for this due...he is definitely cross-categorical...Not just Gospel.
