Any Plans for Black History Month
« on: January 24, 2012, 11:03:40 AM »
Does anyone have special plans for Black History Month?

If so, what are your plans during this time?

Is it necessary to celebrate Black History Month?

Any suggestions from those who do celebrate Black History?

Im doing two Black History Programs at the schools.

I think it is important to take every opportunity to share as much knowledge as you can about black history with these young people to fight off some of this self-hate they have

That's good brother.  It has always been a special time for me.  It made the month of February exciting and something to look forward to when I was in school and in the churches over the years.  My present church don't really celebrate Black History.  :( :(  I've had my greatest moments of bonding with former classmates while in preparation and performing in such programs.

You educators (and everyone really), need this documentary. It explores African history before slavery and our contributions to the world.

It shouldn't be .... IMO for us "Black History Month" should be every month. Our story should be told to our chIldren AND YOUNG ADULTS  at every opportunity. Teachable moments abound if for no other reason than the depth and breadth of our contribution to this country other than picking cotton, the blues and jazz.  When you consider the impact of Africa and the African holocaust on the rest of the world the teachable moments jump considerably and even as an educator tidbits can be slipped in as food for thought at many steps along the way during the course of a school year in science, math, the arts and social studies.

Loose the chains .. Stop waiting for February to look down the road from whence you have travelled.

There is an old Native American saying .. I forgot which nation it was .. but it goes something like .. "If you know I have a history you will respect me more .. if I know I have a history I will respect myself more.."
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.

I can ask my Pastor and church leaders if we want to do something. We usually have the leaders of our church give some history. But maybe we could have some of the younger folks present on something.
Thanks for letting me hang with you guys!

Hmmm, that makes me wonder. Do predominantly white churches acknowledge BHM? Not the multi-cultural ones, but the ones that are like almost ALL white?

IDK, kinda coordinating with teachers now. But it seems a mix of poems and songs at one school, and the early childhood at the other school always does a journey through black music, sorta of like a music timeline. The 3-4 yr olds dance to James Brown, The Temptations, Louie Armstrong, Cab Calloway over whoever we select.

Every month we sing a different hymn, so I am going to see this Feb if we can sing 'Lift Every Voice and Sing'. Also, the 2nd Sunday of the month is kid's worship so they are organizing a play and we are going to sing a spiritual with them.

My sister recently wrote a kid's book around the story of the lady in Little Rock that was able to work for equal pay for Black teachers, Thurgood Marshall was her lawyer, so I may have someone read that.
Thanks for letting me hang with you guys!

We are having a Black History Program this year spear headed by yours truly.  I've been apart of this church for about 8 years and we haven't had one.  So, instead of sitting back complaining about why aren't they doing anything, I finally got off my butt and put together some stuff and submitted it as led by the Spirit.  It was first introduced two years ago but will be manifested this year through some urging.  The vision is to get the youth more active in church while grooming them for public speaking, dance, and singing.
So I'm sitting here learning the "I have a dream" speech.  The older people in the drama department will do a few things when we present the opportunity to the youth.  It just dawned on me that in all these years I've never actually heard the Old Negro Spiritual "Free at Last".   So I'm looking into it now.  If anyone have good ideas for a Black History Program please let me know.  I'm already thinking about what we can do next year.

This year, along with many of the traditional Black History elements, we are using Black History Month to be a Tribute to Andrae Crouch. I'm excited about it, and I'm looking forward to helping teach some of his songs to our music groups within the church. I believe our praise dance ministry is preparing a praise dance to one of his songs as well. Should be an exciting month...

That sounds like a good plan Eagle Eyez.
