I'm not sure if you all heard about this yet, but it's most likely a true story, as it's all over the consumer's FB page (which I saw for myself) and Kraft Food's official FB page, as well.
In short, a man was giving his daughter one of the pouches, and it was sticky when he pulled it out of the box. It began to leak so he went to hold it over the sink. As the juice leaked out, he felt a large object inside. They cut it open and found something incredibly gross. The lady said that the moment they opened it, the smell stunk up the whole house! She said it was horrendous.
When she first posted the pics on FB a few days ago, people speculated that it was a human body part, then someone guessed it was a frog part... someone else said it was an eye (which I don't get because it looks nothing like an eye and it's about the size of the palm of a small hand, and flat). For days, folks all over FB were speculating about what it could be. It actually looks like a mushroom-like mass that indeed came from a human's insides... When I saw it, I definitely thought it was a body part. Kraft sent it to their labs as well as an independent lab for testing.
It turns out that it was MOLD. Yes, mold. Inside a CapriSun pouch. That they were about to give to their child.
WARNING: the article has pictures of the mold, and it is absolutely GROSS. If you have a weak stomach, you may not want to see this.

OHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
That is all I drank for about 2 months. My family and I love, Love, LOVE Capri Suns. That's our traveling drink. We stock up on those when we travel. My niece and nephew love those. I am so mad right now. Disgusted and angry.
Thanks for the warning.
-
Nasty.
I appreciate the warning, can't believe I looked anyway.
SN: My local news was covering the story of a the bankruptcy of "Butcher Boy" a locally owned business. Apparently when they went bankrupt, there was a refrigerator trailor full of meat on the premises. It is unclear whose responsibility this trailor was, but the power got cut off 2 weeks ago and the meat rotted away in the hot sun since then. They then cut to a video of the nastiest, hugest maggots oozing out of the trailor and onto the ground... it was unreal. They said you can smell the stench all through the neighborhood. They are supposed to clean it up today, it took so long because it's on private property and they had to go through red tape to get approval to do it. Still don't know who will ultimately be charged for the clean up costs... Yeah so this was my 2nd gross out in as many days. I noticed this morning when the same story ran, they had a disclaimer that the video may be considered graphic or disturbing to some... yuck.
They could've gone a one-block radius and found enough families who would gladly receive those prime cuts of meat before they created this fiasco... SMH

I hate them personally, but my mom buys them for my nephew every week. Thanks Rue, I will definitely tell mom...

You have got to be kidding me on this Wednesday afternoon. I LOVE Caprisuns. I can run through a whole pack in 10 minutes. Lawwwdddd.....

Bet you'll think twice before you jab another pointy straw in a foil pouch... LOL!!! j/k, I've had my share of them, two. I'm sure it's not the case with all of them, I'd imagine that they'd taste pretty nasty with mold growing inside... *dryheave*

Ewwwwwww. Like Ewwwwwwww. Just horribly gross.

ROFL @ Teej. :D :D :D :D
Oh and speaking of the foil pouch, the woman said that she is not suing Kraft (which I can't say that I would be so gracious. I'm traumatized and it wasn't even my doggone experience). All she wants to come of this is for Kraft to change the foil packaging to a clear, see-through package.
@BW, you're welcome. And btw, another lady reported finding the same thing in hers a couple of days ago (Monday, I think). She also has pictures.
Nessa. That. Was. GROSS.
-
It was, huh? I thought without the pic it wouldn't be as extremely gross, but I think the mental pictures may be just as bad. My bad, y'all! LOL!

:-[ :-[ :-[
Coincidentally, I had my first CapriSun today. For one, I was snacking on some Lunchables for the first time, and I didn't know it came with a CapriSun. Secondly, it wasn't until I just remembered to share the story that I realized the lady on FB was talking about CapriSun. She kept referring to it as Kraft juice pouch or something like that, so I thought it was a knock-off brand. :-[ But you can best believe I won't be drinking another one.
-
I rarely purchase caprisun but imagine drinking the stuff....then feeling that in the pouch and cutting it out..... :-X

TGMKDDCS- Thank God my kids don't drink Capri Sun!!!!!!!!

I think so, too. Especially if the smell was bad enough to 'scent' the whole house.
Did I ever tell y'all about my best friend in college and that all nighter we pulled?
-
Ehh What doesn't kill ya.
I not a capri-sun drinker but I have been one and If someone gave me a cold one right now, I would suck the thing inside out. ;D
I'm guessing its just me but that pic is far from gross. Looks like the top of a mushroom. If you want gross do a google image search for "brown recluse bite" Now that's gross.
....Umm ...yeah, seriously don't search for that if you are squeamish. You've been warned.

Ugh! I love CapriSun! I can't believe this happened. While I'm not egar to drink CapriSun now I wonder if the mold was there because the store was carrying an outdated box of CapriSun or if it just came out of the factory like that. I haven't clicked the link yet, but I so don't want to see it.
-
I just called my First Lady and told her about this, because her dozens of grandkids drink CapriSun. She said she already stopped buying them, because she had one that seemed like it was rotten or something and when she poured it out there was black stuff in it. She said she buys the Kool-aid ones because the back of the pouch is clear.
-
I do not believe that is mold. Kraft is tryna pull a BP. :-\
-
The mold grew due to the packaging being damaged... Either in transport or at the factory...
I like capri suns... and something like this will not stop me from buying or drinking them... I will think twice about opening a package that is sticky or damaged... But I wont stop drinking them... to each his/her own...
-
To say it was anything else might be the end. :D
-
I just bought 4 boxes from Wal Mart because they were $1.97 a box. Dang. Guess I will take them back :-\

Uh, no. That big nasty thing inside the package, did not come from fluids leaking out... the mold would have been outside of the package and the contents would have leaked completely out since it has been "punctured" long enough to grow a mold "artifact" inside.
-
I doubt this is the manufacturers fault. I'm pretty sure it the distributors (stores) fault. I was in a grocery store and saw some apple juices that visibly had green mold growing in the jars.
I've bought fig newtons before, that had worms and cocoons in the packages. I've bought cereal with bugs in it.
Most of the time, the stores keep these things on their shelves in one place without dusting or anything. When I see packages with dust or leakages, I pass.
-
I do not believe that is mold. Kraft is tryna pull a BP. :-\
I gotta say...
(a) it doesn't look like mold, to me, and
(b) I'm not clear on how it could've gotten in there like that...

Nope. Her FB page has about 25 pictures, including pics of the carton and the pouch. The expiration date had not even drawn near, let alone passed.

Aight, I get off at 6, I want my $6 too. :D

what ghetto stores do you be going to? :D

That wont stop me from drinking them. Any smart person would not consume something that is not properly sealed.

uuummm Nessa, I aint tryna start nuffin... Buuuuuuut... According to what was discribed...
In short, a man was giving his daughter one of the pouches, and it was sticky when he pulled it out of the box. It began to leak so he went to hold it over the sink.
The mold could have gone inside of the packaging... IMO... It may have started with a lil dust might and grew into that big glob thingy... It was probably drawn to the sugar in the packaging and developed from there...
And as someone stated earlier... Most of these stores DO NOT keep their foods in clean dry places as stated in the packaging... Most of them are in it for the money and NOT to sell products you can actually use...
I have gone to a store brought a loaf of bread... Got home only to find that it was molded... Went back to the store and guess what... ALL OF THE BREAD WAS MOLDED!!!!!... I FLIPPED!!!!! I got my money back and made the treck to Walmart.... In short... its all about where these people store the food and how its stored when the store is closed for the night...
-

What she said.
I doubt this happened at the plant. That would mean a whole batch of the drinks are tainted. It most likely happened after it left the plant. If the carton was sticky, then there could have been a tiny whole in it that let the bacteria in, which was also semi-sealed when the corn syrup dried.

Oh God! I feel sick...I gotta go barf!

1. One lady just brought up a pretty good point: Because if there was one leak that resulted in a bizarre fractal mold growth, imagine how many smaller, albeit harmless, molds you've probably sucked up unknowingly because they didn't have enough mass that you would feel them through the package?
Now THAT makes me feel ill.
2. (Though it may sound extra-deep or whatever, God has really been dealing with me this year about his intentions for our bodies and taking better care of our temples, etc.), this is all the more reason for Christians to take better care with what we put into our bodies. I think I told y'all yesterday that another lady reported another mold incident with CapriSun within a day or two, and she lived in a totally different state. A commenter on a blog reported that a few years ago, she was at a high school party and half-way through a jug of store-bought tea, a big glob of brown slime came out of the jug... of course this is after others had already drunk half the jug. She hasn't bought tea since.
I think much of these food issues we have today could be avoided if we made more of our own foods and beverages. But yeah, values have changed... and we don't have time for that. We don't have time to fill our bodies with the food God provided for us, so we get a bunch of processed stuff and wonder why we end up eating mold, salmonella, e coli, sand, ungodly doses of salt, sugars we can't even pronounce, food coloring and all kinds of other stuff.
I'm obviously not about to go "back to Eden" with my food consumption. But I can start somewhere. If God be my help, I will make my own beverages... maybe except when I have my semi-annual Dr. Pepper craving. I already started baking my own bread. But seriously, take a look at our refrigerators and cupboards and freezers. Everything we have is processed. We can't even make french fries. We gotta buy those frozen. Everything. By the way, I can't believe I - the Queen of All Things Unhealthy - just typed that. God is really working on me. LOL It's just ridiculous. We need to get our values back. When I was growing up, we did have Kool-Aid, but my mom made sweet tea, fresh lemonade, orangeade, watermelon juice, fresh squeezed orange juice, and all kinds of other stuff every other day or so.... Nowadays, we don't have time because we gotta work more to make more money to buy more stuff to look more better to get more opportunities to make more money. Where does it end?
And "more better" was intentional.

Sweet.
Now, you know producing your own is sometimes more expensive than buying....unless you're going to start from the root, and grow it as well.
I read an article that if everyone planted a small garden, it would drop our carbon emissions, because there would be less vehicles needed to transport food.
I also read another article that foraging pretty common in rural Missouri. I used to see old ladies foraging in Korea, picking wild greens from the grass on the military post. Apparently, there is a lot of food growing wild, even in the cities. We just don't know how to recognize it and prepare it, so we're stuck buying foods that are chosen and picked for us--a sort of food dependency not unlike our oil dependency. We did a lot of research on this last year, but we haven't went anywhere with it.

It probably won't be for me. My entire list of beverages consumed are:
water
tea (hot or cold)
coffee (I'm not growing coffee beans, so I'll continue to buy whole beans and grind them as I have been for years)
Orange Juice
Minute Maid Citrus Punch
Dr. Pepper
A&W Cream Soda
Fanta Strawberry
The first group (water, tea, coffee) makes up about 90% of my beverage consumption. When I have a taste for a punch or juice, I will make orangeade or watermelon juice, which I love. I will know exactly what is in it.
I'm not much of a soda drinker at all (maybe once every other month or so). So I'll continue to indulge for now.
I don't think that will be more expensive for me. And to add to my previous post, although many of them still have preservatives and sugars and coloring, if you use those frozen juice concentrate cans, at least you know what's in the container when you pour it for your kid (or yourself). I just hate that we feel we don't have time for all that... trading health for convenience. That's what it is.

I'm still behind on that one. I probably did about a quart of water last month.

Yeah, not a lot though. I'm averaging about a bottle a day (which is about 23 oz, I think).
I've never been a thirsty kind of person. A typical day for me is a cup of coffee, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and maybe one bottle of water (or sweet tea). I don't drink with each meal. I don't get thirsty during the day. I don't drink with snacks or anything like that. Other than coffee, I typically just drink one time during the day.
-
AH, FORGET IT!!!
*Mad and slightly embarrassed*

I forgot to post this: WARNING - it's similar to the first pic. Apparently, another woman found mold in her apple juice back in 2009.

I think these people are overreacting.
Are you kidding me???
Dude. I promise you with everything in me... that if I were two seconds away from drinking something or two seconds away from feeding it to my child, niece, nephew, grandchild, or neighbor... and found a 3-inch round, fleshy, human-tissue looking, odorous object in the drink, I would probably have to be sedated at least for a few hours.
And I'm not kidding at all.
That experience can be very traumatic. Finding ANYTHING in your food can be traumatic, let alone something HUGE and gross and smelly and unidentified. It could've been something toxic. Or a human body part. Or an animal body part. For nearly two weeks, they didn't know what on earth it was!! These people aren't suing. In fact, they didn't even start a public campaign or anything. They posted pictures on their FB page (which any random person would've done) and others picked up the story.
I don't see how you can say they're overreacting.
I may be overreacting. My chest is pounding right now as I think of it. But I definitely don't see how you could say they are overreacting.

I swear on a box of Capri Sun's that I could hear your voice when you were saying this. :D
-
Well I have NO intention of looking at the picture. I get grossed out easily by fungi, mold, maggots, e.t.c.
Sadly I love CapriSuns. I've been having them as a child. I am officially switching to ONLY juices encased in a clear, transparent container. :)

I honestly would not have even opened it or drained it. Once I saw it was sticky and leaking, I would have just put it in the trash and would have never known that there was mold in there. *shrug*
I told my Mother about this as she buys these a lot for the kids, and she said that this happened to her with a bottle of Iced-T. She said she drunk all of it only to find a big thing of Mold at the bottom....

A friend of mine from high school drank a 7-UP from 7-11 and got sick from mold in the bottom of the bottle. His mother sued, they were millionaires. Its pretty gross that this could happen. I mean, I hear of instances when you open a soda, and if you or someone drink from the bottle and put it back in the fridge or wherever, then mold can set in from your saliva that gets into the bottle. But sheesh, unopened containers/ bottles. Thats is kind of scary to me.
*drinking a Capri Sun*
I wonder what causes it. ?/?

Again, if people eat and drink the way God intended, we wouldn't have as much to worry about.
-
I honestly would not have even opened it or drained it.
I just got a little sick reading that. Seeing as how I'm drinking tea as we speak... It's green tea in a clear bottle, though.

I don't know, Rue. I mean we buy our water because they say the stuff at home is bad, if stuff bottled at the plant is also bad, I guess we're screwed, lol. I just do the best I can, and be sure to pray over it.

Yeah, I vaguely remember that situation. She said she got sick just thinking about it.
I think she wants us to go to the well, or maybe the nile river and get water. ;D

Nah, I'm thinking more spirit of the law, not really letter of the law. I mean, I'm not going to go out and kill a turkey for dinner, nor am I growing my own potatoes to make french fries.
That's not quite what I meant.
I just think that we have grown over the last several decades (before many of us were even born) into a society that relies too heavily on processed foods and beverages. We trade in nutrition for convenience, and are willing to pay a price for it, too. All because our values have changed.
Please don't get me wrong. I'm a junk food addict. Love Doritos, Dr. Pepper, Taco Bell, McDonalds, Hot Pockets, and all that stuff... I'm not sitting on a high horse preaching to the folks on the ground. It's not that at all. I just believe that we have taken this whole consumerism thing a bit too far, and I'm concerned that there's really no end to it.
Personally, I drink bottled water for convenience. I'm definitely not concerned about all that stuff they say about tap water. I grew up drinking tap water and so did my parents and their parents... and we're all still alive. LOL When I don't have a bottle, I drink regular tap water. I don't boil it or anything special. I just drink it. I guess that's the NYer in me because our water in NY was very clean coming up. We were always on the lists of cleanest tap water in the US. I don't think it's as clean in the south, but I'm not sure.
But really I just mean eating more natural foods (and making more stuff at home) and fewer processed foods with all these preservatives and additives and stuff. It's just not good.

This reminds me of those commercials where the people be like "You know that has high fructose corn syrup in it?!?!?" And the other person is like "so... You know that has high fructose corn syrup has corn in it, and in moderatio has the same nutrition as sugar..." :D It cracks me up... Wooo... :-\ guess youd have to see the commercial to get what I am saying :D
-
Yeah, I saw a few of those commercials. One of them cracked me up. I think they were eating a popsicle or something... the key is the moderation part... and the TRUTH is that most of the products we buy don't have "moderate" amounts of high fructose corn syrup. Most of them list HFCS as the first ingredient, or one of the first three. Like I heard one person say, those commercials are no different from the tobacco industry telling smokers nicotine isn't addictive. *shrug*
I can't talk too much about that because I never researched what the danger is in it. I just know they say it's bad. I have no idea why.

I dunno... you'll have to ask God if it's okay with Him... since your body is His, innit? LOL

:D ... I like the "You'll have to take that up with management" approach. LMBO!

LOL They threw the "it's fine in moderation" defense out when they started putting it in everything. Everything. I always read the labels when I go grocery shopping. If it's not powdered, it most likely has HFCS in it. (slight generalization)
On another note: Whenever I pick up a drink, even if it's clear, I look in the bottle. Some times, there is a mucus-looking substance in the drink. If I see it, I don't buy it. It may just be the congealed HFCS, so it may only need to be shaken....but I don't like drinking snot.
-
but I don't like drinking snot.
I hear its high in HFCS, so you may just want to drink it in moderation... :D
-
LOL @ Drinking snot.
@ Rue, I get what you're saying, and I know that I feel much better when I buy fruits and veggies and eat natural stuff like that. It is more expensive, and requires more planning, which are the main reasons I haven't mastered consistency at the level I'd like.

All the worthwhile foods rot. That's how you know they're good. Because they rot easily when exposed to air and not refrigerated. Rot and mold: The sign of something worth putting in your belly (Or, at the very least, no preservatives, which are supposed to be a bad thing...)
:\ ;D
Yeah, like unlike that Mcdonald's Hamburger that was left out for 3 months and never rotted. :D

I read the synopsis in the OP, didn't check out the link...
I don't see what's the big deal. The pouch had been punctured somehow during the boxing process, and it grew mold. That's nothing special. It should grow mold if it isn't sealed and is closed up in a dark box. It's like opening a jar of salsa and then sticking it in a cupboard. Mold grows.
