Not quite, it would be like the sergeant saying "ten-hut" and instead of saluting, the soldiers said "Ten-hut" back to their sergeant.

Well, I meant taking your definition and applying it correctly. Either way, I'm seeing what you're saying.

So what I'm saying, is it makes sense (at least to me) in that context.  Praising God is the highest form of praise--praise given to God is higher than praise given to any other object or being.

Yes. Steel's contention is the use of the word itself, not the act of praising God.

If I'm reading/understanding correctly.  :-\

IDK, to me, it's not a stretch then to use the word.

Again, Steel is saying that, by virtue of the definition of the word, "YOU praise God", to use the word is, in essence, telling someone ELSE to 'praise God'.

Again, I think I have that correct.  :-\

However, I believe that using the word to exude praise to God is quite fine with God, IMHO. *shrugs*

No problem with using the word, but if we use it, we should use it correctly.  And, we shouldn't really call it the highest praise because it's really not a praise at all... it's a command or an exhortation TO praise.

...and he's the only one that matters.  I did get what you were saying, I just thought it still fit the use in most songs where I've heard it.

Praise God!  [because] it's the highest praise!  Sounds okay to me.

For the record, I want to clarify that I don't think it's that big a deal one way or the other, and I think praise is so personal that none of us should tell another how to do it...

With that said, I have to point out that this is an example of us using our own logic and reason to determine what is okay with God.

I won't go as far as to say that it's not ok.  To me, its nothing more than misuse of a term.  It's like saying "clap" and someone thinks you mean "jump" so they jump.  Is God offended by that?  I doubt it.  But if you know better, you may as well do better.  :-\

My understanding is that the "you" is actually added to the translation to emphasize the fact that it's a command and not an act.

I just hesitate to get into analyzing and being overly critical of someone's sincere praise to God.  It makes people so self conscious that they are more worried about praising wrong and whether or not you or I find their praise acceptable.

Because God looks on the heart, if someone says Hallelujah and in their heart the intent is to offer sincere praise to God, I would take the leap of saying, he is accepting of that praise even more so than those who know the proper terminology, and don't have the sincerity.

I'm pretty sure we'd ALL agree with that.  ;) 8)

I think LongFingers (or someone else) already mentioned The Breakfast Song.

And I agree with Wolfman, that song definitely has meaning.  It caused me to ponder whether I REALLY wanna go to heaven after all... no coffee???  I don't think so.

I agree, I would never mention this to someone who was praising God. Who am I to get in the middle of their relationship. I'm to busy trynig to keep my part of my elationship with Him together. But between us, I don't think our discussionhas done or will do any harm.

I always wondered about the biblical reference for that line in "Honor to the Dying Lamb"

King Jesus lit the candle by the waterside
To see the little children little chlidren baptised
Honor honor unto the dying lamb

 ?/?
Where in the Bible was that? or was this another song that was an Underground Railroad code?
